Tips For Raising African Cichlids
By Carlos Legaspi 04/04/01

African cichlids are my favorite cichlids. They are not that hard to raise as long as you maitain your water quality. I recommend changing water about 10-20% every week. Feed them variety of foods from flakes, pellets,to tetra bits. Bloodworms should be fed occasionally since African cichlid can die of bloat from too much food or protein. Feeding twice a day - morning and afternoon or evening should be fine. I use undergravel filter with overhead powerfilters and sponge filters. Provide them with lots of hiding places and caves. I also recommend putting several African ciclids from 10-20 or more in your aquarium instead of just 5 or so cichlids. This is because African cichlids are quite aggressive and some may bully the others to death. Usually you can mix all types of African cichlids. But I prefer keeping Lake Tanganyias separate from Lake Malawi cichlids. Enjoy your African cichlids.
