CATHEDRA "PEREJIL/LAYLA ISLAND" OF GROTESQUE MILITARISM

It's knew for everybody that nazis feel veneration for everythig related to army: uniforms, weapons, badges, symbols, flags, national anthems and the same militar paraphernalia are very priced fetish for any nazi. Is so high the veneration they feel for the military world that their favorite argument for find solution to any conflict is to aply the military way. This can take to situations of the highest absurdity.

The crisis of the island of Perejil, or island of Layla, that gives its name to this cathedra is the best example of the late. This "island", really a tiny unhabited rock in front of the moroccan coast, claimed also by Morooco and by Spain, without any clear documentary evidence of reason for any of the parts, and sporadicly used by both countries in function of punctual needs, for abandon it later withoun grater inconvenience, has become famous those late days as main character of a history suitable for a comedy from Monty Python.

The carnival begins on July 11th. That day, a group of moroccan soldiers install a camp on the rock. Nothing that didn´t happend before. Problems came when the soldiers hoist the moroccan flag on top of the rock. This act is interpreted by Spain as an invasion, and begins an angry exchange of disqualifications between both governments, with a clear ultranationalist colour, to whom the citizens of both countries assist with astonishment. Spanish government español demands the dislodging from the rock by moroccan soldiers, and threaten to enagage santions and break the commercial agreements between both countries. But things don't stop here.

July 17th. is time to spanish army for ridicule. A commando unit of the same capture the "invaders", that are brought later to the border, install a camp and hoist their flag on the rock. This time is moroccan government who talks about invasion of their territory and about war declaration, while spanish governmet talks about an act of legitimate defence.

The grotesque show cames to the climax when is needed the mediation of the Uited States between the government of two countries that mantain great commercial and social relations, while the people of both sides of the border moves between the indifference, the joke in front of the monumental absurdity, and the shame of know that the whole world looks at the pathetic spectacle and laughs. With the exception, of course, of the minority of dumbs to whom is addressed this course, the fanatics that, in both countries, see on the refered acts a logical consequence of the evilness of the adversary, a reason of pride on the reaction of their governmet, a supreme act de patriotism on the military intervention, and over all, a great chance for the exaltation of the military epic.

Finally, from the hand of Colin Powell, on July 20th is passed the resolution of return the rock to their legitimate owners: the seagulls, the lizards and the goats. Flags and armies are retired and the carnival finish, at least here and now. Because while exists irrationals worshipers of the militay epic, absurditys like this will continue being produced around the world. As it must be!

The student joined on this course will study the refered facts, an will compare them with another similar facts of history, like, as example, the "war of soccer" and must construct from them a praise to militarism as solution to all troubles.
