Captain Henry Gloval
A perfect
example of what a person can accomplish in the face of overwhelming odds,
Captain Gloval was a war-weary veteran submarine commander placed in command of
the SDF-1. Not only did have to put the mysterious battle fortress through her
paces, he also had the added responsibility of breaking in a crew of raw
recruits. The initial shakedown cruise of the SDF-1 turned out to be rougher
than expected when Macross island was suddenly attacked by invading aliens...
aliens that had been bred to be the perfect fighting machines. With the
possibility of total annihilation all too imminent, Captain Gloval fought back
with a vengeance. He plotted strategy for strategy against the Zentraedi, always
keeping one step ahead. His courage, skill and determination became the essence
of the Earth's defenders. In his attempt to escape the attacking Zentraedi,
Gloval ordered an emergency space fold, which transported the ship, Macross
island and even some of the surrounding ocean, somewhere near the orbit of
Pluto. To make matters even worse, after the first fold operation, the fold
drives mysteriously disappeared effectively standing them millions of miles away
from home. Despite limited supplies Gloval took the 50,000 civilians of Macross
island into the huge ship and set course for Earth. After spending a year in
space under constant attack by the Zentraedi, the SDF-1 finally returned home.
The United Earth Government banished the SDF-1, her crew, and all 50,000 former
residents of Macross island from earth, in hopes that the SDF-1 would lead the
Zentraedi fleet away from Earth. Captain Gloval was forced to once again go into
space, lest he be attacked by elements of his own peoples defense forces. The
SDF-1 was going to be there home from now on. Dolza, supreme commander of the
Zentraedi, ordered the destruction of Earth. When they had finished folding,
over five million ships surrounded the Earth. Over 80% of the surface was
annihilated instantly. Captain Gloval, along with a ragtag bad of Zentraedi
defectors charged into battle. The Grand Cannon, Earths most powerful reflex
weapon cut a path in the alien fleet allowing the SDF-1 to attack Dolzas
flagship. The resulting explosion destroyed the majority of the remaining
Zentraedi vessels. With most of the human race dead, and the surface transformed
into a boundless desert almost completely devoid of water, Captain Gloval took
it upon himself to help reestablish the human race on Earth.
Two years
later the reconstruction of earth was beginning to show progress, plants began
to sprout in the once barren soil, and human colonies had begun to spring up
throughout the wasteland. However, all was not well. Khyron, who was probably
the worst of the Zentraedi warlords lusted for vengeance. Obsessed with the
destruction of the space fortress, Khyron led a attack on the SDF-1 using a
repaired Zentraedi cruiser. Even after sustaining a direct hit from the cruisers
main cannon, Captain Gloval, along with the rest of the bridge crew, rose the
ship from Macross lake for the first time in two years. With just enough power
for a single shot from the main cannon, the SDF-1 fired, crippling Khyron's
cruiser. In a last ditch effort, Khyron set a collision course and rammed the
space fortress. In a last act of heroism, Captain Gloval pushed Commander Hayes
into an ejection pod. Sadly, Captain Gloval and the rest of the bridge crew did
not survive Khyron’s suicide run, and the SDF-1 was destroyed, poisoning the
surrounding area with radiation for generations to come.
As Commanding Officer of the SDF-1, Captain Gloval was faced with the awesome task of fighting a war against an overwhelming enemy and protecting the lives of over 70,000 civilians and crew members aboard the battlefortress. Gloval's calm demeanor and cool-headed decision making provided a steady hand during the various crises of the First Robotech War.
