Why the Big Secret?
Note: This is an opinion response and in no way is necessarily the opinion of any of the Broncos' organization.

So why the big secret of who will start at quarterback Sunday? Can't tell you.  (You can tell me...I'm a doctor - sorry that was from 'Airplane!')  But in all seriousness, is all the secrecy worth it?

Compared to points and wins, both Brian Griese and Gus Frerotte are pretty similar. When it comes down to individual performances, Griese is much more accurate and Frerotte is more erratic (no offense or anything but a fact is a fact).  When they are playing a defense that has a lot of interceptions (i.e. Baltimore), the more efficient a quarterback, the better.  But Griese hasn't seen much action at all in the past 5 weeks- what about the rust that was evident after Kurt Warner returned and threw 4 interceptions? Let me just say something to that- Brian Griese is NOT Kurt Warner and has one of the best quarterback concentration levels in the NFL and I would be very surprised if he did not have a surprisingly well performance.

I'm not trying to say that Griese will start- but I think if Frerotte were starting, or had a good chance of starting, there would be none of this secrecy and that Shanahan would made it clear.  Shanahan even said that he would announce today if Frerotte were definitely starting (I heard no such announcement personally.)

Let's say Griese does start- will he be able to play all four quarters after leaving the last game after 5 plays? You know, if he's not dead, I would count on him playing as long as possible.  After last week, he said he could've gone back in but didn't want to "jeopardize" playing this week.  This guy is tough- one of the toughest there is- and has the heart to want to help his team.  I truly believe that he will only leave the game if he cannot even function.

Wait- I'm going to scratch that.  If the Broncos have a strong lead for the majority of the game and therefore are going to be playing next week, Griese may come out just to avoid an injury that would stop him from playing in next week's game.

I think- I mean, I know- Mike Shanahan knows what he's doing.  Perhaps this uncertainty may be the tactical advantage the Broncos need.  Also I personally think it's cool he closed off practice to all the reporters.
The element of surprise can be a scary thing.
