ROOMS
Overview
Accommodation includes
double rooms, triples, suites, and singles. Unlike students at the UCLA
residence halls, Co-op members choose their room and room-mates. Once youÕve
moved into a room through the official "bump"
process you may remain in that room until you decide to apply for another. Also
the Co-op allows continuing students to stay in their rooms over break periods
(Christmas and Spring). All rooms are furnished. At the Co-op, itÕs your room,
and we want you to feel comfortable in it.
Type of room
What type of room will I get
and when?
UCHA is a student
cooperative; hence, all room selections are made by each member according to
their individual seniority. When you check-in however, you will be assigned a
temporary room, until you pick your permanent room. These selections are
usually made during the second or third week of each quarter (as per the UCLA
calendar) during the official process called "BUMP". Bump is a special day when students gather to
select the rooms of their choice. These selections are made according to each
member's seniority, where the most senior members are called upon first to make
their selections followed by members of lesser seniority. Members may also
improve their chances by group bumping which means teaming up with other senior
members. If you group bump, the seniority of your group is averaged. Seniority
is defined as the number of days a member has actually lived at the UCHA co-op.
Most new students usually live in a triple the first quarter of their residence
at the co-op. For more information please call the front office.

What size are the rooms in
UCHA?
Room size varies depending upon
the building you live in. However, the average sizes are:
Triple - 11'x20'.4" |
Double - 10'.8"x18'.2" |
Single - 7'.6"x6'.10" |
Is it possible to rent a
single?
No. As rooms are given out on a
seniority basis, all singles, and most of the doubles are taken by the members
who have been here a longer time. Usually a new member moves into a triple
until they have enough seniority to transfer to the room of their choice.
Inside the room
Are the rooms furnished?
All rooms are furnished with a
writing desk, bed, closet, curtains and a bookshelf. All personal items such as
bed sheets, pillowcases, towels etc. need to be brought by you. Members are
welcome to organize the furniture in their room to suit their individual style.
However, any changes should have the consent of all roommates. A member
may not make any structural changes, and for any other changes, should inquire
and obtain clearance from the Facilities manager. Additionally, a member may
not remove items of furniture from the room, and doing such carries a penalty
of US$100.00
What
size beds do you provide?
Beds
are usually twin size. The approximate mattress size is: 38"x77".
Please note we also provide bunk beds that are similar in size.
Are
personal appliances (like a radio or TV) allowed in the room?
Yes.
Personal appliances are allowed in the room provided that they are not cooking
devices (ovens, microwaves, hot plates etc.).
Is there any internet
service in the rooms / on UCHA premises?
Yes, there is a
wireless internet service on its premises. It covers most common areas (i.e.
lobby, patio, A-Wing lounge, study rooms) and a majority of rooms (mostly in
Hardman Hansen Hall) at UCHA. The project is a work in progress, and as such
some areas donÕt receive the wireless signal as yet. It is estimated that the
wireless connection will be operational in all areas of the Co-op no later than
the end of 2005. In addition to the above, the UCHA has a fully operational
computer room (approximately 12 stations) that provides internet / print
services to members. Residents are able to utilize these facilities upon
registering for it.
Bathroom
How are your bath and shower
facilities?
While some rooms have attached
baths, most rooms share bathrooms in the same hallway. On average four rooms
will share two bathrooms. However, while residents of a hallway share the
common bathrooms, each bathroom is occupied one member at a time.
Room Up keep
All members are
responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their room and bathrooms during
their stay at UCHA and at check-out. Cleaning supplies are available on the 3rd
floor on Sun/Mon and Wed/Thurs or with the Facilities Dept. Please check
postings for hours.
Bathroom chores
All co-opers are
required to clean their bathrooms as directed by the cleaning supervisor.
Directions are posted on the door of your bathroom early in the quarter (1st
or 2nd week). Failure to clean bathrooms carries penalties (talk to
the bathroom supervisor if unclear on any policy). Those in rooms that have
attached baths are exempt from this requirement and will need to work out
cleaning schedules with their respective roommates. Bathrooms may also be
cleaned for ÒcreditÓ. However, a member may not clean any bathroom without the
prior approval of the bathroom supervisor and crew chief/department head.
Compensation will be ÒcreditedÓ as per the amount determined in the UCHA rules
(please see rule book for details).
Members may not make payments in
lieu of performing their bathroom or chore obligations.
