Bump
Bump is the process by which rooms are allocated to new members or those old members who wish to change location or type of room. Rooms are given out based on a member's seniority. On Bump day, all new members (and interested old members) assemble to pick rooms (from the available pool of rooms) to live in. If you want to live with a roommate of your choice bump will be the day this is officially done as well.
The policies regarding room allocations are firm. As rooms are given out based on seniority, a single is absolutely not possible - more likely a triple.
There are, however, official means by which you can obtain a double:
a. By either selecting one that's open when it's your turn to make a selection or
b. By obtaining the permission of a member who already has Tenure on a double (i.e. rights to the room) and who is willing to admit you into an open space.
Bump is held on two days:
the first day consists of the selection process of rooms,
the next day, consists of the actual move-in to the new
room.
Chore / Work Shift
As it is a cooperative and is run
by mostly students, all members living at the UCHA are required to perform a
chore obligation which is equal to 4/5 hours a week. This contribution helps
keep rent costs low.
Crew
All
chore assignments fall under a particular crew (i.e. Kitchen, Facilities, Security etc.). When a member moves in he/she is assigned to
one of these crews (usually the kitchen) and may transfer to another crew with
the consent of that crew chief.
Crew Chiefs
Is
the chief student supervisor in charge of a particular crew.
He/she is responsible for the daily activities of this crew and is in turn
supervised by a department head.
Department Heads
He/she
is a full-time (Non-student) manager, who is overall in charge of a
department. There are three department heads and all crews fall under the
direct supervision of these three individuals (Office, kitchen and
Facilities). All department heads are supervised by the Executive
Director.
Deposit Number
All
persons moving in to the co-op (UCHA) are given a deposit number which
becomes their identification number for transactions in the organization.
Fine
A
penalty levied for non- compliance of a household requirement. Fines are given
for various reasons.
Chore
shift: For non-
fulfillment of a household chore requirement, it is calculated per hour
(i.e.$10.00/hour).
Bathroom:
Fines are levied
for not cleaning the bathroom according to the specified criteria (see postings
for details).
Uncooperative:
Fines are also
given for behavior that is deemed not in keeping with the spirit and
expectation of the organization (see rule book for details).
Orientation
The
UCHA offers his new members two orientations.
General
orientation: At
this orientation various aspects of cooperative living is covered. The
orientation is held usually on the first or second week of the
quarter and all those attending may be given QPHs.
Kitchen
Orientation: This
is the second major orientation that you are required to attend. It covers food
service information that includes
Parking Bump
This
follows the same procedure as stated above, for the allotment of parking
spaces. Here too allocations are made according to a memberÕs seniority.
QPH (Quarter Project Hour)
This
is an additional chore/project requirement worth 4 hours (to be completed at
any time during the quarter), which is required of members in addition to the
weekly chore requirement of 4/5 hours. Members may fulfill these requirements
by doing special chore projects (as advertised) or one of individual choice
after having received prior authorization (ex: painting ones room).
Seniority
Is
the number of days a person has stayed in the organization.
Zero Seniority
If
a member owes more than $80.00 at the time of Bump, he/she is deemed
delinquent, temporarily loses his/her accumulated seniority (for that quarter
only) and is forced to bump with zero days. There is a similar
requirement of chore shifts Š members exceeding 2 unfulfilled shifts, are
deemed delinquent and are placed on probation and may have their seniority
restored only on completion of such by the due dates (usually the end of that
quarter).
