Tie Fighter (1994)

I had heard rumors of this game's release right when X-Wing came out. My response: "TIEs have no shields! What are you supposed to do, fly around until you get hit once and die?"

Well, I was sort of right, and after I got the demo several months later I couldn't wait to fly for the Emperor's navy.

Tie Fighter fixed many of the problems of X-Wing while adding new features which enhanced gameplay. The storyline was not as weak as its predecessor and the music was much better!

Pros

You're flying a TIE FIGHTER and get to shoot down those pesky rebels! Graphics used inhanced gouraud shading and lighting effects. Time acceleration feature was a great plus. New combat multiview display with enemy damage percentage much better. Mission Goals a great feature. Map feature was nifty, but not very useful. Different difficulty levels.

Cons

Graphics still 320 X 200 but getting better. Storyline not very interactive. The Tie Defender is a goofy looking ship. No speech during missions.
LACK OF NETWORK OPTION.

Overall

An unbelievable game for its time, and still impressive today. Add-on mission was Defender of the Empire. Introduced Missile Boat. Oy Vey! The thing carries more armament than a capital ship! This shouldn't be!
