Nepal
Student Association
![]() Nepal Student Association provides food, fun for students by Laura Bello, Staff Writer September 10, 2001 The Nepal Student Association (NSA) elected a new board for the fall semester on Aug. 30. The board members are Prakash Kafle, president; Anil Manandhar, vice president; Suraj Poudyal, secretary; Atin Baral, activity coordinator; and Adarsha Chand, treasurer. Dr. William Morey, professor of decision sciences and sponsor of the NSA, said that some objectives they have are to network with other students from Nepal, help each other do well at UCO and teach the UCO community about Nepal. "It's not just about Mt. Everest," Morey said about Nepal. The meeting was followed by a new student's orientation, food and fun fair. The games allowed new students to introduce themselves to the club."They are usually shy, so this lets them have exposure to people at the university," Kalfe said.Jalal Daneshfar, the activities coordinator of the International Office, said the NSA is the eighth largest international student organization on campus this fall. They have been an organization since 1994 and have 95 members, Kalfe said."Our members are from all over. Most are from Nepal, but some are from Oklahoma, Japan, all over the world," Kalfe said. The 72 enrolled full-time students from Nepal is an increase from the 46 enrolled last semester. Kalfe said part of the increase is because of recruitment efforts of NSA."Strong international organizations help UCO attract international students. They also create success for international students' UCO experience," Morey said. Some monthly activities NSA has are movie festivals. September's movie is Caravan shown in the business building."The movies are reflective of our culture," he said.Every Friday, they hold a soccer tournament with members of the association at the World Class Soccer Complex in Edmond.Nepal is a small Himalayan country situated between India and China."It is smaller than Oklahoma but there are 36 different languages," Kalfe said.Students that would like information about NSA, Nepal, its culture, Hinduism or Buddhism can contact Kafle at 715-2752. The annual membership is $10. Posted on vista September 11,2001 (To link) |
