Multicultural Night and Raffle Ticket
Well,
the first week of uni has started for second semester and UCUISS had been active
taking part in the Multicultural Night on the 20th of July and trying
to sell Raffle tickets for the society which were drawn at the event. Quite a
few people were hard at work trying to find sponsors for our tickets selling it,
getting membership discounts, making our famous fruit punch for the food stall
and other activities. The people who helped and took part in the activities were
Veril, Ian and Vellene who tirelessly walked around Civic, Manuka and Belconnen
(and drove to and from) to get us the sponsors and membership discounts.
Veril, Ian, Heracles and Intan helped in the production of the tickets. The same
people helped with the creation of our famous fruit punch. Ayu, Aprin, Heracles,
Dita, Thip, Veril, Ian, Intan and Wati helped sell the tickets. With Wati and
Heracles being the highest single sellers of the tickets (not to mention
sacrificing their own money for the good cause). And not to forget Mrs Ida who
cooked those lovely foods and scrumptious Martabak, Satay and Spring Rolls for
the event. All the dancers were great and patient enough to not only lend their
time but to also come for ‘practice’ at UC for Murad, the International
Students Officer at UC.
Amanda
with her friends from the Isti Indonesian Dance school (Diana, Mita, Dani, Intan
and Iva) performed to the loud applause of the audience the Betawi Ngarojeng
Dance from Jakarta. They were quite popular of course for their dance skills and
not just because they were very pretty in their lovely costumes. Rini and Sylvia
from the Embassy’s Department of Education and Culture also came to perform
that night. Rini with her Fan Melayu dance and Sylvia (an ex Univeristy of
Canberra student) was superb in her dramatic Cendrawasih Balinese dance. It was
unfortunately a bit of a long wait for the dancers after they were told the
wrong time to perform and get ready. The second semester Multicultural Night
seemed to take longer than the first semester one with ‘more’ time seemed to
be devoted to the South Asian cultural performances. It was also unfortunate
that we were told to stop selling food at a particular part of the night when
the Education minister and other important guests made speeches. Mrs Ida was not
that happy with the arrangement, which seemed quite mismanaged, and at the end
of the night we were only able to break even when it came to the amount of food
we sold.
The Raffle tickets sold were more than half the number produced with over 300 tickets sold. The surprise of the night was the winner of the STA $100 voucher being Ian with his lucky number A008 coming up. I would like at this time to clarify that there was no ‘KKN’ (Corruption, Collusion or Nepotism) happening in the drawing of the tickets. The person who drew the ticket was Peter O’Hallaran, the Manager of the Administrative and Services sector of The University of Canberra Student Association, and he rechecked the winning tickets for authenticity.
Thank you again to those people who helped and volunteered their time and energy for this event and raffle. Hope you won’t be too discouraged to perhaps help again in similar events coming up.
