Soccermania
UCUISS
had soccermania on
their minds. We wanted to do some sport to warm up, get our bodies moving,
socialise and celebrate the arrival of this traditional (Northern Hemisphere
& other cold parts of the world) winter game.
With this in mind and the fact that our members from Urban Management
were leaving Canberra for good to Indonesia by the end of the first semester we
decided to have a few soccer games against ANU.
Our
sports coordinator Nining pulled some strings and managed to book the UC soccer
fields for no extra cost for practice sessions before the ‘friendly’ soccer
matches against ANU. UCUISS’ soccer practice was held on Sunday the 13th
of May and the 20th of May with around 18 of our members practising
and quite a few on the sideline cheering. On the 20th of May quite a
number of our members also turned up to play tennis with Sayogya at UC before
going off to play or watch soccer. (Thanks for the free tennis lesson Sayogya).
The
first ‘friendly match’ against ANU was on the 25th of May,
(4.30pm) at the ANU soccer field next to the Chifley Library. Our two-practice
sessions and extreme confidence paid off. Or was it the cold that got our blood
rushing after waiting for an hour for people and soccer ball to show up?
Whatever it was, UCUISS won 4 goals to 2. With Larsita and Andre scoring
two goals in the first half that lasted for 35 minutes. Even after many
complaints and the bitter winter winds of the afternoon our brave tropical
soccer players fought on with their spirit of 1945 (semangat 45). Alas, ANU was
not that easily defeated with their secret weapon by the name of Aan coming on
to the field in the second half and scoring 2 goals for his home team ANU. But
yet again Larsita and Andre scored one goal each to win the day 4 –2. Well
done, everyone deserved their Cadbury chocolate!
With the first victory still fresh in their minds, UCUISS challenged the ANU team to another game this time at UC’s soccer field. Unfortunately because of an earlier engagement at the Embassy, or maybe because of UC’s fearless reputation, not many ANU players could make it. With whatever team was put together the game went on with our team yet again winning with a score of 4 – 3 against ANU. The last goal by ANU was a penalty kick awarded to ANU’s secret weapon Aan. Unfortunately our goal keeper Ian had not been able to save that point, never mind because UC with the help of soccer players like Erik did really well again, while Priyono playing for ANU also did well by scoring a goal. We hope that everyone had a good time and thanks to the Urban Management people for enlivening the game with their big attendance.
