His first school was South Point, a school which by its sheer stupendity
has manged to carve out a place for itself in the Guiness Book of Records.
However, he wasn't here for long. In class II he got beaten up by a guy,
and being the weakling that he was, never dared to fight back. His father
being an over-doting father promptly decided to shift him out of a school
fit only for hooligans!! And so his first opportunity to fight back went
waste, and it took him a long time to realise this and learn to
fight for himself.
His second school was Patha Bhavan. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but
the school was started by a group of teachers who decided to move out of
South Point and start their own school. So the "rebel" was promptly accepted
in the middle of the year in class three. Here he spent the rest of his
schooling years. Fortunately he didn't come across too many bullies here.
Patha Bhavan probably had the sweetest of teachers in its primary school.
They all cared for the students like their own children and tried to educate
them intellectually in the best ways possible.
Utteeyo was a book worm from a very young age and shied away from all sorts
of physical activities till a very long time. As a result he related very
instantly to the atmosphere that prevailed in the new school.
After his school final examination he went to Japan, to spend his vacation.
His father was already teaching in the Otaru University there for the last
one year or so. Like every other kid from a developing country he was awestruck
as he entered the Chitose airport in Japan. It is almost ten years ago
and he hardly remember all his experiences there. Although he remembers
making friends with some Americans
and a few Japanese girls. Oh! he also remembers a Japanese school girl
shouting "I love you" as she passed him by one day much to his embarassment
and amazement of his parents!!
I am sure by now a lot of you have got quite bored by this seemingly endless
droning of mine! Those of you who still have the patience to be with me,
let me fast forward a little. Utteeyo's high school days (eleventh and
twelfth) were very drab and uninteresting. He chanced upon a lot many uninteresting
teachers and a great many boring friends and classmates. There were a few
interesting people like Joy, Tania, Rishiraj, Sougato and Pushpa. But the
rest were very boring indeed, always talking about IIT's JEs and just that!
If you want to know some of their whereabouts check the Batchmates.com.
If you are in luck you just might find some of them.
After his twelfth, he came to Delhi for his Bachelors in Economics. He
joined
Ramjas College
in North Campus under Delhi University.
In Ramjas he came to meet the nicest gentleman he had ever met and probably
will ever meet! He is Rashed Rubbaiyatt,
a guy from Bangladesh who was his classmate. They soon became the closest
of friends. He has gone back to Dhaka, and they still ring
each other up or mail each other at times! They really have been through
thick and thin, sick and sin!!! Utteeyo also had a small group in Ramjas,
Dinkar, Rashed Vineet Shuchi and Amiti. They had their share of fun and
frolic.
After
his B.A. he went on to do his Masters in Economics from the Jawaharlal
Nehru University. If you are a student of JNU go ahead and
join the JNU alumni
here. He was in the Centre
for Economic Studies and Planning under the school of social sciences.
Well, in JNU he probably had the nicest time as a student. He had
a horde of friends!! A few of them are Rajeev,
Abhijit,
Monica, Vidhu, Karishma
Samit and Moushumi. In our third
semester they even went for a trip to Ranikhet and Nainital.
After his M.A he went to IGIDR
for a semester. However, he couldn't adjust to the Bombay scenario and
decided to come back and join JNU for his MphiL. Along with his Mphil coursework
he also worked at the Indian council
for Researh in International Economic Relations. He finished his coursework
in MphiL and went on to write his GRE. He got admission offers from a few
Universities in the US and decided to join the Rutgers
PhD programme in Economics in fall 2000. Then he had a better offer from
the economics department in the University
of Arizona at Tucson, and transferred there in fall 2001. In 2002 he
cleared his prelims and moved on to his second year (whew what a relief!).
In the summer he taught his first under-grauate course in economics (econ
200). He also worked as a research Assistant, in the Economic Science laboratory,
once home to the nobel laureate Vernon
Smith and current dwellings of some of the big names in experimental
economics like James
Cox, Mark Walker,
Stan
Reynolds, David Reily,
John
Wooders and many more.
What
struck him most in Tucson was its wonderful sky, and
he never seems to get enough of it!! The ever-changing, neverending colours
of life seem to play on this huge blue canopy all day and all night long.
Tucson probably is the sweetest city with its friendly population.
Utteeyo loves adventure, and the unknown. He is a great music addict, passionate
about cricket, loves scrabble and everything beautiful that meets his eye!!
He plans to be in Tucson for a while and finish his PhD. you can reach
him if
you feel like it.
