Kanathur
Angalamman Kuppam is a quite and serene fishermen hamlet in
Kancheepuram Dist. Eighty seven families were living peacefully
in this village before tsunami hit in Dec.2004. As a part of
rehabilitation work, Udavum Karangal has adopted this village for
constructing permanent houses for the villagers. An area of 3
acres was ear marked for this, which is 100 metres away from the
present village. |
| The construction of the project was launched on 15th December 2005 by laying foundation stone on the three acres land donated to Government by a well wisher. The total project area measures to 130680 Sq. ft. and the plinth area of each house is about 410 Sq.Ft. This 410+ Sq. ft. house will have a sit out, one hall, one bed room, kitchen, wash room and toilet. A staircase will be provided at one side of the house which will help the families to use the terrace. The cost of each house was Rs.2.5 lakhs. The design of houses are done as per the guidelines given by Government of Tamilnadu and the design was approved by them. We have also signed an MOU with the Government accepting the construction norms specified by the officials. The whole project area was fenced with barbed wires and stone pillars. The construction work started on 1st April 2006 and the same was completed on 20th December 2006. |

Inauguration and handing over of
keys of the
72 permanent houses at our Tsunami Housing Settlement " PRASHANTHI " On the second anniversary of the Tsunami on Dec.26, 2006 Udavum Karangal handed over 72 houses built by it in Kanathur Angalamman Kuppam near Kalpakkam to the fishermen who had lost their houses in that calamity. The function started with a pooja on the sea shore by the villagers in memory of those who had lost their lives in the tsunami. A procession of children from the families started from the sea shore carrying a lighted candle to 'Prashanthi Colony', the venue of the newly built houses. Mr Sivakumar, Cine Actor formely inaugrated "PRASHANTHI" by unveiling the plaque. Dr.Padmini Ranganathan, film star Sivakumar and S.Vidyaakar handed over the symbolic key to Mr.Prakash Yadav (Collector of Kancheepuram District). |
