On the back of the inevitable trickle of US imports and the limited vinyl only release of "I Did It Like This", Ugly Duckling are poised to blow up mad big in 2001. The Long Beach, Calif. based trio of Andy Cat, Dizzy Dustin' and DJ Young Einstein have built an impressively large fan-base in the UK following their early releases on the Bad Magic imprint, and a tour support for The Jungle Brothers that secured them their reputation as one of the finest live hip hop crews in the world.
"Journey to Anywhere" is Ugly Duckling's first full-length album release, its songs reflecting the 'Journey' that preceded its creation. "I Did it Like This" and "Friday Night" recount years of paying dues and learning about hip-hop music, while "Introduckling" and "Rock On Top" address their international travels. However, "Journey to Anywhere" is not strictly autobiographical. The title track alone features cameos from Hong Kong Phooey, the Groovy Ghoulies and Pippi Longstocking, while "Pick-Up Lines" lambastes any number of stereotypical would-be ladies' men to hilarious effect. And then there's "A Little Samba," one of the most amusing send-ups of hip hop braggadocio on record.
