Burning Ice, Part II

Vack to the Report List
Back to the Grecian Reports

After out morning meeting with Cahill, we all go about our day’s activities. For Luke, that means a strenuous day watching overweight vacationers who think that they will undo the effects of years of bad habits in one short week aboard a cruise ship work out in the gym. Maggie will spend the day lugging luggage around and bringing high calorie snacks to the staterooms of overweight vacationers who worked up a huge appetite in the gym. Karin occupies herself by directing social activities for those who are not foolish enough to waste an entire vacation in a gym. Claire spends the day on the phone making appointments for Cahill and Dr. Gumble. Cahill continues to play Teneco executive Richard Cornwell. I plan on doing absolutely nothing until I have to make my way back to Hell’s Kitchen (I don’t know why, but that’s what all of my assistants are calling it).

My plan to wallow in complete nothingness is disrupted by a phone call from Monotone Man. It seems that, as guest chef, I am supposed to demonstrate my vegan culinary expertise. Now I have to go find a computer so I can look up a recipe and some vegetable cutting techniques.

Coincidentally – thanks to Claire, Cahill and the doctor are having their hair cut at the same time. Cahill manages to convince the doctor to allow Cahill to set up a demonstration of his technique at a ‘neutral’ location on one of the islands. He offers Claire’s services to inform the other potential ‘buyers’ about the demonstration. Then he uses his connections in the Babour Shipping Family to procure a hotel conference room and provide light refreshments. Why do I get the feeling that I’ll be cooking the fucking day away?

During dinner, Cahill spots Nikolai Tupelov and formulates a plan. He tells Claire to contact Karin. Claire finds a crew member, who calls Karin and Claire arranges to meet later in the disco. She returns to the table and a frustrated Cahill realizes that he should really specify now when he wants to talk to someone right away. Anyway, he tells Claire to tell Karin to play some head games with Tupelov and try to convince him that he is in danger from the Western authorities and should offer us something to help him out of his predicament.

Claire meets Karin in the disco, they perform a rousing verse of dueling accents and Karin leaves in search of Tupelov.

Eventually, she finds him and manages to sit next to him at the bar. For some bizarre reason, they converse in English and are now locked in heavy competition to see which of them can use more English expressions incorrectly. There is a frenzy of English slang dictionary page turning, but eventually Karin is able to convey her message to Tupelov. He invites her back to his room and shares what he knows about the doctor, namely that he was fired from many jobs and they (the Russians) think he has the formula committed to memory.

Cahill goes to the casino, and manages to gamble an Arab (who just happens to be representing OPEC’s interests in the method auction) out of some of his wealth and the two go for drinks.

So that’s where we are: Cahill is planning his little get together to watch the doctor’s demonstration, Karin is planning how to defeat Tupelov at Scrabble for foreigners, Claire is making the arrangements for Cahill’s little shindig, Luke is formulating exercise plans for plump passengers, Maggie is planning to get some time alone with Luke, and I am planning a brilliant demonstration of my newly acquired vegan cooking expertise.
