Mystery Flying Object Sighted On Northern Peninsula CBC Newfoundland & Labrador Jan 2 2002 07:04 PM EST http://stjohns.cbc.ca/editorServlets/View?zone=Stjohns&filename=nf_mystery020102 Castor River, Nfld. - There's a big mystery near Plum Point on Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. Over the holidays, witnesses saw some sort of small aircraft fall into the ocean just offshore. But a search turned up no sign of wreckage. Picture Here Caption - Pius Tatchell describes what he saw. It happened just off the hills at Castor River about 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Pius and Derek Tatchell saw it all. They describe seeing what seemed like a person suspended below a small aircraft of some kind. Then it went out over the water and landed about a mile and a half offshore. They went straight to a phone and called the police. The police called in the Coast Guard. A helicopter and boat arrived, but it was getting dark. They looked around, then left. They haven't been back. A pilot who often flies in the area told CBC News what the men might have seen. He says it could have been either a hang glider or a motorized ultralight. He says both of these can get away and fly on their own. But, he says, the fact that the Tatchells saw it slow down before it hit the water could mean there was somebody aboard. The Coast Guard says it did a thorough search, but found nothing. They say it could have been anything from a downed weather balloon to sun glinting off birds. And, they say, nobody's been reported missing. But the Tatchells know what they saw, and they say it wasn't a balloon, and it wasn't the sun glinting off birds. |
