JROTC began in 1911, when Congress
allowed JROTC Units to be opened in select secondary schools across the United
States. The first Navy JROTC unit opened in the Fall of 1966 after being
passed through Congress in 1964.
NJROTC stands for Naval
Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp.
We are one of many units in the United Stated and a few foreign countries.
JROTC teaches many values to its cadets and helps to develop many
citizen-like and leadership qualities and strengths. While building
physical strengths through PT (Physical Training), and also teaching
responsibility, and teamwork.
The main goals of NJROTC are to:
*PROMOTE PATRIOTISM
*DEVELOP INFORMED AND RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS
*PROMOTE HABITS OF ORDERLINESS AND PRECISION
*DEVELOP A HIGH DEGREE OF PERSONAL HONOR, SELF-RELIANCE, INDIVIDUAL DISCIPLINE
*PROMOTE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASIC ELEMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR *NATIONAL
SECURITY
*DEVELOP RESPECT FOR AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEED FOR CONSTITUTED *AUTHORITY
*PROVIDES INFORMATION ON THE MILITARY SERVICES AS A POSSIBLE CAREER
*DEVELOP LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL
*PROMOTE HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION
*PROVIDE INCENTIVE TO LIVE HEALTHY AND DRUG FREE
Every cadet has numerous oppurtunities
to earn ribbons, medals and cords, by being active in the unit's programs.
There's teams, such as rifle, drill, color guard and orienteering, and service
oppurtunities both in and outside the unit. Many units also hosts a Mini-Boot
Camp for cadets, in order for them to prepare for the year ahead. They learn
and work on drill (marching), PT (phyiscal training) and build teamwork qualities
that will help them to be successful throughout the program.
The many teams offer a chance to
do things that many other students in the school cannot. How many kids can
put on their application that they were on a rifle team, or a drill team?
Not many. These teams may not sound like much to some people, but to those
who are on them, and the dedicated parents of the cadets, they symbolize
many hours of hardwork and dedication on striving to be the best. PT keeps
the cadets physically fit and helps them to live a healthier life. Physical
Fitness Tests, or PFTs, are given twice a year, once in fall and once in
spring. Cadets can earn ribbons, and ribbon devices, for each level of completion
if they pass.
The JROTC Programs also keep cadets
involved in the community through various activities. Whether it be a food
drive, helping an elderly person with errands and yard work, or just hosting
a dinner to celebrate the area's Veterans. The cadets who help with Community
Service, not only help their unit and their Community, They also help
themselves.
JROTC teaches about citizenship
and your rights and duties as a citizen. Learning things such as respecting
authority and the country's flag. Cadets learn about the military and what
all goes in to making our military able to work, and to be the best, in a
time of need, and even when not. NJROTC allows its cadets to learn about
ships, submarines and other types of defense. It also teaches about their
defense and their main goals and missions.
Cadets learn respect and responsibility
that they can carry with them through life. Each cadet needs to have respect
towards other cadets and to those who are Upperclassmen to them, as well
as the instructors. Each unit is thought of like a "family" and tries to
act like one as well. The responsibility of the uniform is a major part of
the program. Each cadet is required to wear the selected uniform on a set
day each week. The Navy provides the NJROTC with all the elements necessary
for a complete uniform for each cadet. The main uniform consists of a shirt,
trousers, cover, belt & buckle, black socks and shoes. All uniforms are
graded each week. The wearing of the uniform shows the hardwork, dedication,
responsibility, and attention to detail that each cadet has come to learn.
Leadership is one of the main features
of NJROTC. Many times throughout the JROTC career, cadets may be brought
into positions of authority in which they will have responsibility for an
assignment, and possibly for other cadets. Many cadets discover that they
do have leadership capabilities that they never knew they had before.
JROTC is not all work. There's
many rewards of all the hardwork the cadets put in. Trips are one of the
best parts of JROTC. You can travel to military bases, cruise on naval ships,
go on team meets, and many other special trips that only JROTC cadets are
allowed to participate in. These trips let you experience things and build
memories that will last a lifetime.
Though it is not a written
goal of JROTC, the unit's exisitance and the cadets that pass through it
obtain many friendships that can last a life time. On trips, in school, and
on teams are where these friendships are started. Because no matter where
you're from or what your past is like, you all have something in common.
As you can see, the NJROTC,
as well as all of the JROTC, develop many qualities to help its cadets succeed
in life. Whether in the job force, the military, or just in everyday life.
A very wise suggestion is, if you know a place where a JROTC unit can be
joined, then do it. It'll build friendships, show great times, and teach
many life applications that will never be forgotten.
