The 1980's

The 1980's marked a change in government, including cutting regulations, slowing federal growth, and New Federalism. Defense spending increased tremendously during the 80's, and one of the causes was the SDI program in which satellites would detect and destroy incoming Soviet missiles.

The U.S. continued to improve foreign relations during the 80's. However some of these attempts, such as the Iran-contra affair, would only hurt the Reagan administration. Better relations were formed between the U.S. and the Soviets through the INF treaty and START II.

Bush Sr. was elected in 1988, and his major triumph was ending the Cold War. The Soviet Union dissolved into Russia, and the Berlin Wall came down.
