On The Eve Of Ashley's Leaving
[Shutdown Frames]
This poem was written on 9/29/97, the evening before Coyote's daughter Ashley left for college.
And so you will go,
To a city and life far from here,
yet always close in my heart,
in my head too,
those days when you were
the entertainment for the
neighborhood...calling out
good wishes to strangers,
persisting until they returned,
your heartfelt greetings.
The world knew of your birth,
a father's blustering pride announced
on the radio your coming.
Now the pride continues with
your going,
and so you will go.
A beginning for you,
no longer a giggling toddler,
fat and sassy, but
a beautiful young woman, strong
decent, kind.....still hollering and
waving at the world, commanding
them to return your smile.
And so, you will go, taking my
love and pride with you,
no longer my pumpkin,
now a Proud Young Woman,
but always my first-born
My daughter,
My baby girl.
