I never saw them dance
and yet
they talked of dances
and joyful times past
filled with music and laughter
I never saw them dance
and yet
they daily lived a work-filled
existence of quiet strength,
integrity, caring, honesty
I never saw them dance
and still I knew
of what old German reticence
wouldn't speak, what only
closeness over time would reveal
I never saw them dance
and yet
they stepped, spun, and
wheeled together for sixty
plus years...until the music stopped,
the music that we all hear,
first for her, a short time later
for him
the dance ended
when his partner left the floor.
