Remembrances

As we prepare to explore our underwater world, let us remember those who have fallen from the ranks.

Mel Fisher

August 21, 1922-December 19, 1998

In 1985, Mel Fisher found the wreck of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha off the coast of Florida. He kept his dignity and humor through twenty-five years of constant struggle and searching for that ship, and ultimately became one of the best known treasure salvers of our time. Fisher was also a pioneer in the post WW II dive era in spearfishing, underwater photography and diving equipment retail sales and marketing.

Lloyd Bridges

January 15, 1913-March 10, 1998

Actor Lloyd Vernet Bridges, Jr., or "Bud" to his close friends, passed away in his Los Angeles home at the age of 85. Bridges was best known to us as "Mike Nelson" from the successful TV series Sea Hunt, which ran from 1958 to 1961 and produced 155 episodes. For many American divers, Sea Hunt was the first introduction to the adventure and drama of diving.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau

June 11, 1910-June 25, 1997

Capt. Cousteau is credited for bringing into production the first of the modern diving regulators, on which many of our current regulators are based. He was a pioneer in underwater exploration and founded the Cousteau Society, which has over 300,000 members worldwide. In addition to inspiring generations of divers, marine biologists, and underwater explorers with his many achievements, Cousteau brought the beauty and mystery of the marine world into America's living rooms through his acclaimed television series, The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, and through his many books. It is for his many contributions within the diving and undersea exploration community and for his influence in popularizing the causes of undersea research and preservation that Cousteau will forever be honored and remembered.

Danny Bowman

1957 to 1983

Danny was from England and worked as a diver and hyperbaric welder in the North Sea for Sub Sea Offshore Ltd. He was tragically killed in a hyperbaric accident while testing for an upcoming job. Danny was a good friend and diver. We worked together on many projects, and I will always remember his humor and gentle nature.--John Hoover
