I graduated from U-High in 1972, the year that the school closed, at the
end of my junior year. I immediately enrolled at the Universty of Iowa
and took a leisurely pace to graduate with a degree in Parks and
Recreation in 1977. I spent the next five years working seasonally as a
Park Ranger for the National Park Service. I began at Herbert Hoover
Nat'l Historic Site in West Branch, IA and then moved west to work in
Glacier National Park in Montana, Grand Teton NP, and Death Valley Nat'l
Monument. I went to Klondike Gold Rush Nat'l Historic Park in Skagway,
AK to be a backcountry ranger on the Chilkoot Trail in 1981. I met my
future husband there, and we moved to Juneau a couple of years later. I
have been involved in land management professions at the federal, state,
and local level since then working for Alaska State Parks, the
Department of Natural Resources, Division of Land Management, the City
and Borough of Juneau as a city planner, then a recreation planner. That
all led me to my current position as Recreation Superintendent with the
City Parks and Recreation Department. Interspersed within those years my
husband, Chas, and I have taken off some nice long periods of time to go
travelling to New Zealand, Asia, and all around Alaska. We love to spend
time backpacking, camping, kayaking, rafting, skiing. Basically anything
in the out of doors that doesn't require a lot of equipment or an
engine. We obviously don't have any children, so are free to roam a lot.
