EDITORIAL COMIC OR CARTOON ASSIGNMENT

THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED AS AN ELEMENT OF YOUR APPLICATION MARK (2 marks), THINKING & INQUIRY (5 marks) AND COMMUNICATION MARKS (5 marks).

This assignment has two requirements:

1. Students will analysis 2 editorial comics or cartoons whose topic is relevant to an economic event or issue.

2. Students will design and complete an editorial comic or cartoon to illustrate a relevant event or issue to economics.

Part One: Cartoon Analysis

Students will research, select and acquire 2 editorial comics or cartoons and answer the following questions for each cartoon.

a) What is the event or issue that inspired the cartoon?
b) Explain the ‘economics’ of the event or issue that inspired the cartoon.
c) Are there any real people in the cartoon? Who is portrayed in the cartoon?
d) Are there symbols in the cartoon? What are they and what do they represent?
e) What is the cartoonist’s opinion about the topic portrayed in the cartoon?
f) Do you agree or disagree with the cartoonist’s opinion? Why?

Part Two: Cartoon Design

Students will research and select an economic event or issue and design and complete an editorial comic or cartoon for this event or topic.

Some of the points to consider in the design of the comic or cartoon should be:

a) Topic of the comic or cartoon
b) Relevant personnel used
c) Relevant symbols used
d) Point of view of the cartoon

Some evaluation considerations:

--Was your illustration and dialogue for your comic or cartoon well thought out?
– Was the message of your comic or cartoon obvious?
– Was the message, illustration and dialogue of your comic or cartoon accurate?
--Did you use appropriate symbols and perrsonnel in your comic or cartoon?
– Was your idea for your comic or cartoon original? Did it demonstrate creativity?
--Was your comic or cartoon visually appeealing?
– Was there attention to detail?
