UNIONVILLLE HIGH SCHOOL HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is associated with the in-school program and is completed outside the normal classroom time. It is intended to supplement and support in-school experiences. Homework encourages the development of self-discipline, good work habits, positive attitudes towards independent study and lifelong learning, assists students in preparing for subsequent planned learning activities, and acquaints parents with their child's in-school learning experiences. At Unionville High School, a reasonable amount of homework in many forms is a part of all courses. Students are expected to complete all assignments.

TYPES OF HOMEWORK

Preparation Homework is to help students prepare for the next day's lesson. Student might review previous material, read a section of a text, or prepare to do an experiment.

Practice Homework is to prrovide students with the needed review and reinforcement necessary to learn material from a lesson in class. This homework is usually directly related to what was taught in class.

Extension Homework is to allow students to expand upon and extend concepts taught in class. Students might be asked to rewrite a part in a play giving it a modern setting, redesign an experiment, or research a topic in the library.

Creative Homework includes analysis, synthesis and evaluation. This type of homework asks students to be inventive and resourceful. It requires them to develop and extend their own ideas related to a class topic or assignment. Essays and Independent Study Projects (ISP) would fit here.

Review Homework is directed specifically to preparation for a test or examination

The following homework guidelines are suggested for students. Actual homework hours may vary depending on the ability and needs of the individual student and the courses the student is taking.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Good time management is an important factor in the successful completion of homework assignments and class projects. Teachers endeavour to provide ample time to complete assignments and to balance daily homework requirements and larger project work. Larger projects, which may involve several hours of study, are meant to be worked on over time. Regular and consistent homework routines will save students the stress and long hours of work that result when students leave assignments to the last minute.
