1991 – 1992 – Jaguar & Peugeot -

 World Sportscar Championship

Derek's younger brother, Paul, died on 21 July 1991 while competing in a round of the British F3000 championship at Oulton Park. At the time of his death, Paul was leading the championship. Derek decided to continue racing, a decision which undoubtedly was tough to make. Looking at things from the outside, it is clear that Paul would have raced in the European F3000 championship in 1992 with a view to making it to F1. If Paul was anything like his older brother, then reaching F1 would have been a formality.

Witolda Maruszewska has written a suitable tribute to Paul Warwick - I can see that a great deal of time and care has been spent on this website -  Paul Warwick Tribute

Derek competed with Jaguar in the Sportscar championship in 1991, narrowly missing out on the title again. Francois-David Lemierre has produced a good website with lots of pictures of the Jaguar XJR-14 that Derek drove in 1991 and can be accessed at the following website: Jaguar Sportscar Site

Derek joined the Peugeot squad for 1992. He won the World Sportscars Championship and Le Mans 24 Hours - finally entering the history books...

Nigel Mansell won the F1 world championship in 1992 for Williams. I recall listening to BBC Radio 5 at the height of the "Mansell affair" (the defection of Mansell from F1 to CART), when Derek's views on this "pantomime" were sought by Johnnie Walker. At the end of the interview Johnnie informed his listeners that an announcement regarding Derek's future plans was imminent... Surely not?
