On 5th April 2007, the passenger cruise ship SEA DIAMOND struck a reef off the Greek island of Santorini. All passengers and crew were evacuated, but it was (wrongly) thought the vessel would be salvageable. Salvors towed the SEA DIAMOND off the reef, thinking that the vessel had been stabilised. Sadly, they were wrong and 15 hours after having initially struck the reef, she went down to lie beside the reef on the sea bottom. Issues over leaking fuel oil from the wreck persist between the owners and the Greek authorities.
