Projects of the kind I have taken on are about making connection with people as part of a process of making artwork. The work involves learning to carry out undertakings, which have several features going on in them at the same time. The discipline of seeing work through to completion is a rigorous one. It is very fortunate that technology exists which allows an artist to document, develop andpresent outcomes of work more easily. The difficulty for the moment lies in being able to use this media at a certain level of skill. The areas I work in require that I grasp the knowledge as soon as I can, I am on a steep learning curve. I must know how to present information such as this, how to harness the means to show the artwork and how to communicate with an audience and colleague/practitioners. All artists will find it necessary to become aware of Information Technology, and its means of use. An opportunity that presents itself must not be avoided, because change is taking place more quickly as time passes. There is a need to move and take up the challenge. The technology being accessed is part of being with the real world. Nothing may be taken for granted. I find as an artist, that I have had to become determined about solving problems as part of the project work undertaken. It is necessary to become a problem solver. I have also developed abilities to think through processes of work so that I know about presenting propositions. The interesting part is in getting from this stage to a created work-something concrete. That can be a long process, containing many moves and alterations. But it sets up a dynamic – a challenge that increases the value of the final stage in a project. Professionally, I have reason to be thankful for being taken seriously by a number of colleagues who have taken time to understand the undertakings I have taken on. There is little that can be more troubling than the realisation that someone, who is eligible to know what you are saying, is not taking in the seriousness of your intention. Obstacles like this are harmful. Years of professional and vocational application are deserving of respect. It would be helpful to artists undertaking large scale projects if they were facilitated through having a lessening of cost on phone bills which can be steep because of calls made abroad in the course of developing projects. Artists who wish to, would benefit from assistance in accessing IT information and an element of training in how to go about this. The Arts Council and other art related bodies can help artists working on projects of a large scale and multifaceted nature by keeping them informed of developments in areas of interest for these artists. One needs to keep in mind that artists in the midst of work are going to be concentrating on particular elements their project. It can be of help to receive advice on connections artists might want to make, particularly in the planning stage of work. Accountancy plays a role in costing out projects and it would help if accountants could be encouraged to assist in laying out costs and to later help with the preparation of accounts-at a cost that is not prohibitive. Artists should be encouraged and if possible offered basic training in compiling accounts. I am grateful for the assistance I have received from my accountants, BDO Simpson Xavier, who understand what I am about. |
