ACT 1 - 09 - Duet - Buffalo and Ferguson

The easily aggravated Chief Buffalo is furious to see the Cavalry on his territory. He threatens them all with death.

Flying Squirrel realizes that if there is no Cavalry, there's no need for a truce and no need for David to marry Fountain. Then he must marry her himself. He pursuades the Chief to be reasonable since the Cavalry's entrance was an honest mistake. He reminds Buffalo that, with no Cavalry, there's nowhere to send his daughter.

Buffalo agrees to be lenient, only threatening death to the Soldiers if David does not marry Fountain that day.

Buffalo:

My friend, although I understand
That you and all your hearty band
  Have made a mistake,
  This journey to make,
Invading Indian Grounds with good intention,

My noble and persistent mind,
The adamant unyielding kind,
  Declares it's a fact
  That your minor act
Was doubtlessly illegal intervention!

But for a change, I'll lenient be,
So do not fret, good friends, for Heaven's sake,
For only if the wedding goes agley
Will there be cause to burn you at the stake.

All:

But for a chance of pace he'll lenient be
And let us hope, good friends, for Heaven's sake,
There's not a chance the wedding goes agley
And (we'll/they'll) escape a burning at the stake.

Ferguson:

Your highness has a heart of gold
Just like the stories we've been told.
  You're honest and fair,
  Enlightened and square,
The very monarch for these modern nations.

And hopefully, by nightfall's start,
We'll have the freedom to depart
  For death at the stake
  Does not go to make
The friendliest of inter-tribe relations.

So with your honor's blessing, we will leave,
Restricted to the boundaries you prescribe.
I'm sure with work we'll manage to achieve
A very happy stay among your tribe.

All:

So with your honor's blessing, (we/they) will leave,
Restricted to the boundaries you prescribe.
I'm sure with work (we'll/they'll) manage to achieve
A very happy stay among (your/our) tribe.
