Duncan Fieldman was born into slavery in 1847. His mother was a maid at the plantation house, so he grew up doing household chores and cooking instead of working in the fields. Better then most slave owners, the Murphys provided a clean and safe enviornment for their slaves. When war broke out in 1862, young Duncan left with the master's son James to fight. James and Duncan were put into the same infantry unit, and first saw action at Fredricksburg. At the end of the war, James signed on with the US Navy. Duncan would have followed, except the Navy did not allow colored folks to serve. Instead, he returned to the Murphy plantation. Duncan continued to work at the Murphy house (the Murphy's hired most of their slaves after the war ended) for many years. James' older brother Jesse taught him to read and write, and eventually arranged for him to be apprenticed to a nearby machinist (under the condition he would spend some time working at the plantation). Duncan absorbed mechanics easily, and quickly became a journeyman. He helped Jesse incorporate new farming technology into the Murphy farm. When Jesse died in 1884, Duncan was distraught. Things seemed worse when the plantation's new owner, James, mentioned he was selling the plantation. Despair turned to delight when James asked Duncan to accompany him to Mars, and to help him start a business there. |

Appearance Duncan Fieldman is an impressive individual. Standing 6'2" with a booming voice, he still maintains his military stature and discipline from twenty years earlier. He tends to wear comfortable suits and a bowler cap when not working, and keeps his dress in immaculate condition claiming that since he grew up owning nothing, he appreciates what he has now. His skin is dark - nearly black - and he need spectacles for reading. When first meeting Duncan, he is very formal and proper - although not to the point of being officious. If he decides an individual expects that kind of behavior, he will continue the act. If the individual chooses to drop decorum, Duncan will as well and will most likely like the person better. |
