Background

Statistics

Lionel Barnes was born in Brooklyn, 1856 to a poor family. He left home at an early age and worked at the theatre. Here Lionel had some success, and the experience allowed him the opportunity to hob-nob with the people of New York society (at least on their free time).

When not acting or shmoozing, Lionel was avidly reading. Pulp novels detailing explorer's adventures on Mars affected Lionel - he yearned to visit the Red Planet. Unfortunately, his acting troupe was very poor and had poor exposure, they would never be able to get to Mars. So, Lionel bid his compatriots adieu' and began his career in the fine art and business of legal swindling.

Lionel saved his money and was able to work his way to Thymiamata on an Edison flyer. There, he picked up Koline and became (at first) a snake-oil salesman (sometimes literally). When the townspeople of Thymiamata became weary of his business, he signed on with a wagon caravan and traveled to the North. When that route became tired out, he paid for travel on a canal boat and traveled through the Tossian Empire.

With all this travelling, Lionel eventually obtained a small savings (almost a fortune) and a very detailed knowledge of Mars around Thymiamata. This knowledge goes beyond just knowing their language, but knowing their culture and idioms as well. Lionel plans to return to Earth and find financial backing to take advantage of this knowledge in order to make his big score.

Appearance

Lionel Barnes is of average height and build, with brown hair and brown eyes. In fact, there is little about him that stands out in any way (amongst humans at least). He dresses to whatever fashion is appropriate, whether it is evening suits, travel clothes, or Martian robes. Even his manner of speech is free of any distinguishing accents.

This banality drops when Lionel is working a crowd. Whether it is acting on a stage (not much time for that recently), learning local customs, or making a sale, Lionel becomes possessed of a manic energy when occupied.
