Britain does not sit idle during the current lull in the Oenotrian War. It is known that Oenotria is building new classes of cloudship specifically to counteract current British forces. This poses a threat not only to Britain's aerial flyers, but her ground forces as well. Unfortunately, the supply of liftwood into Syrtis Major and Parhoon has not increased enough that ample numbers of gunboats can be built to support all of Britain's endeavours.

Due to the success of HML Truculent in supporting the British first column forces on Mars, a second juggernaut was designed, built, and sent to Mars. HML Ferocity is, in effect, an experiment on the capability of ground forces to strike at aerial targets. Her two 6 pounder revolving cannon (of dubious value against ground targets) and her gatling guns are mounted to elevate sufficiently to attack flying targets. Furthermore, a large battery of Hale rockets will allow HML Ferocity to engage cloudships at high angles of attack and (using a large volley of rockets) hopefully to deliver enough damage to cripple or destroy very large cloud vessels.
