Description |
The Kestrel is a 280 meter long juggernaut. It is one of the largest and most heavily armored frigates in production. It has the capability to act as a command vessel, launch fighters and hybrid craft, conduct an assault and carry troops and cargo. Although protected from all angles, the Kestrel was designed to aggressively attack. Much of its heavy weaponry (three of its four heavy coilguns, and four of its ten heavy lasers) are optimized for firing to the forward aspect. The front also sports a heavier amount of armor. The most recent variant of the Kestrel has increased internal capacity for hybrid craft, more cabin space and a revolutionary pulse laser point defense system. This set of rapid fire lasers is designed to rapidly detect and destroy incoming missiles - the bane of capital ships. Existing earlier versions of the Kestrel in the Federated States Military and Nihojin Imperial Military will be updated with these changes within three years. The Kestrel typically carries two fighters and a transport hybrid internally. |

History |
The first of Kestrel class was built in 2105 (FSS Kestrel). Although the Kestrel appears in many nations space forces, it is the traditional warship of the Federated States Military. The Kestrel design has seen a lot of action. The first conflict which a Kestrel participated in was the clash between the pirate vessel Silverheart and the FSS Thor (a Kestrel I). Unfortunately, due to design flaws in the first series, this battle went to the pirates - the Thor had to be rescued. The FSS Mark Twain (a Kestrel III) attempted to battle aberrants at the battle for the Esperanza in 2114. The Kestrel III FSS Pheonix tangled with PRC space forces during their 2119 mini-war. Three Kestrels, the FSS Baltimore (a Kestrel IV), the PRS Tzo (a Kestrel IV) and the UANS Bebe' (a Kestrel III) all participated in the 2122 attack on Chrome Prime. The FSS Hilo was on hand for the 2123 crash of the jumpship Kalikanaasi (but was unable to stop the tragedy). |
