Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the right time we will reap a harvest
if we do not give up.
Therefore, as we have opportunity,
let us do good to all people,
especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Galatians 6:9-10
Thank you to all who have provided backed goods and snacks to the workers at Pioneer Electric. It is very appreciated by everyone at the company.
I spoke with Randy, Ed and Chris at Pioneer this week. They shared some interesting details with me about the rain and ice storms and the affect it has had on our area, especially as they work to get electricity back to SW Kansas.
We've heard that about 3,500 power poles were snapped from the weight of the ice and the battering by the wind. Randy told me that essentially any line that ran east and west was affected by the north wind. The areas hit the hardest were Haskell, Stevens and southern Finney counties.
This week, eight days after repairs to the poles and lines have begun, 4,000 homes are still without power. Over 300 lineman comprising over 50 crews are at work. Almost 300 lineman are from out of state, some from as far away as Mississippi. Crew members are being put up in local hotels by Pioneer, and there are so many of them that they are having to use hotels in Liberal. Servicemen are working 16 hour days, seven days a week. Two servicemen are members here: Justin Vardeman and Neal Mangles. We appreciate these guys!
The ground is still so wet that some crews have to have caterpillars on site to pull the service trucks out of the mud.
Pioneer is catering breakfast and supper for the workers. For lunch they are providing sandwiches they can eat on their work site. That is where our cookies and snacks are being used.
Chris told me that the baked goods are wonderful, but we can also provide anything that can be put in a lunch bag: cookies, sandwich meat, fruit.
This storm has impacted our area hard. Even the governor came out for a tour. As Perry challenged us last week, this is a good opportunity for us to be involved in offering some encouragement and service.
Work will continue for a couple of more weeks. If you would like to contribute any goods, please put them on the counter in the fellowship hall. If you have anything that needs to be refrigerated, you might just write "Pioneer Communication" (or "PC") on it so I will recognize it in the refrigerator.
Thank you for all you have already prepared and donated. This is a good service to our community, especially to those who are working long, hard hours away from their families. "Let us do good to all people."
