The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will see athletes from 71 nations compete in 16 sports (12 individual and 4 team) over 12 days.

Melbourne’s world-class venues will hold the majority of sports. Most of these venues are located along the Yarra River within the city precinct. Bendigo will also be hosting some events.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will hold the opening and closing ceremony. The MCG is one of the world’s largest and most outstanding outdoor sporting grounds. It seats over 100,000 spectators.

The sports to be featured are:

  • aquatics (including swimming, diving and synchronised swimming)
  • gymnastics (includes artistic and rhythmic)
  • shooting (includes clay target, full bore, pistol and small bore)
  • cycling (includes road, track and mountain biking)
  • athletics
  • basketball
  • netball
  • EAD (elite athletes with a disability) events
  • rugby 7’s
