Newsletter # 3    March 1999

This month we would like to thank Dr. William Harris, Mr. George Roth, and once again Mr. John Rasnick for their generous contributions for newsletter postage, telephone and expenses for S.C.S.T.M.Also, we thank you all for your prayers and support for our petition by gaining even more signatures from friends and relatives..We now have almost 300 people on our petition and mailing list..Some have not only filled their petition form, but called requesting more forms to sign up relatives and friends!Thank you one and all…
Due to the sad events in September 1998,and then a delay in waiting to pass on some “good news” concerning our petition, I put off sending out our newsletter until now.Unfortunately, .. the “good news” never materialized.
I had been hoping to announce our bishops blessing to celebrate the Tridentine Mass for the people of Savannah. But after a recent meeting between Dr. Maher and Bishop Boland, I am told that the bishop is not willing to grant our petition, even though our members have increased to almost 300 people.(the Atlanta archdiocese had only 100 people, yet their petition was granted)Rather than give reasons for his denial, Bishop Boland gave Dr. Maher a set of guidelines written by Bishop David Thompson of the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina. He neglected to mention, that even though the people of Charleston followed Bishop Thompson’s “guide lines”, the good bishop still rejected their petition..(with good reason… ---- they followed his guidelines)..Bishop Thompson requests his people to document their objections to the Novus Ordo Mass,.. and at the same time,..one of the requirements of the granting of the indult is that all petitioners express complete acceptance of the N.O Mass!
It is a particularly demeaning “layering-on of conditions” to the implementation of Ecclesia Dei as it treats "legitimate aspirations" as a sort of pathology.Such lack of compassion and respect finds no support in the documents that have issued from the Holy See with respect to the indult since 1984; to the contrary, as recent statements by the Holy Father and Cardinal Ratzinger demonstrate.
What is the purpose of interrogating those who wish to assist at a Tridentine Mass to ascertain their possible objections to the Novus Ordo, and asking them to try to overcome them with their pastors' help?Would the same course of treatment be prescribed for a Maronite Catholic who might happen to take up residence in Charleston? I think not..
The practical effect of erecting such roadblocks is to discourage people from asking the bishop for the benefit of an indult which the Holy Father has repeatedly urged them to bestow generously. By so doing, it helps loosen the bonds of ecclesial charity that should bind the faithful to their Ordinary and encourages the development and growth of schismatic movements -- the very thing Ecclesia Dei was issued to prevent.
Roles ModelsNot Forgotten
The months have passed and still we grieve. Especially during the upcoming  St. Patrick’s Day season. We have lost two wonderful men within our community who have left their mark. And because of them, this world is a little better place in which to live..  Both of these men, ran the good race, and I'm sure as they were greeted by Our Blessed Savior, they heard Him say,.. "Job well done, good and faithful servants."
Msgr. Daniel J. Bourke had been hospitalized at St. Joseph's Hospital  Sept. 3, after a fall.  Doctors treated him for a subdural hematoma, or swelling of blood in the brain, and his physical condition had temporarily stabilized but  he died Sept. 17, at St. Joseph's  after an operation.  Msgr. Bourke would have been 89 on Sept. 28 The following day, on Sept. 18, Gregory Ross Jenkins Sr. died of heart failure at St. Joseph's Hospital.  Greg was 54 years of age.
Both of these men were patiently awaiting the day that our petition may be granted, and they could once again see the Tridentine Mass celebrated in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
The passing of Monsignor Daniel J. Bourke, who earned the unofficial title of Savannah's best loved Irish Catholic, and of Greg Jenkins, one of the first to sign and support our petition,  brought an end to the lives of  remarkable men who touched and inspired people with their faith and love of Christ Jesus.
Greg was retired from the Army, was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Knights of Columbus, was active in the Boy Scouts of America, and was one of  the initiators and representatives of the Savannah Coalition for the Support of the Tridentine Mass..
Greg, along with  Dr. Felix Maher, at the request of the bishop, attended the meeting of the Deanery of Priests to present our petition for the Tridentine Mass.  He had expressed his love for the Tridentine Mass, and felt it would unfair to let the next generation pass without ever experiencing the beauty of this Traditional Roman Rite.
Though we grieve their loss, their deaths are less a reason for sadness than it is a cause  for thankfulness and appreciation for the contributions they have made to our community and our Faith..  In these days, when good role models within our society are few and far between, it is men like these, that have shown us the way to goodness and truth of the Traditions handed down to us from the Apostles, Saints, and Doctors of the Church.  To many of us in Savannah, life just won't be the same  without them.  They will forever live in our hearts and minds.
Both Monsignor Burke and Greg Jenkins fully agreed with, and supported Our Holy Father's wishes that:
"respect must everywhere be shown for the feelings of those who are attached to the Latin liturgical tradition"(Ecclesia Dei, 6c) and asks the bishops for "a wide and generous response" to requests for their celebration.

Quote of the Month...
I am of the opinion that the old rite should be granted much more generously to all those who desire it. It is impossible to grasp what could be dangerous or unacceptable about that.  A community that suddenly declares that what until now was the highest possession is now strictly forbidden and makes the longing for it seem downright indecent, calls its very self into question.

It's Now Official
We are now officially an affiliated chapter of "Una Voce America"..
"SCSTM" had been invited to become an affiliate of  "Una Voce  (One Voice) International".  Mr. Fred Haehnel, director of "Una Voce America", extended an invitation for  SCSTM to affiliate or become a chapter of "Una Voce".   The required paperwork and organizational fees were sent to Una Voce headquarters, and we are now part of a world-wide network of Roman Catholics who support the  Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as codified by  St. Pius V  to be maintained as one of the forms of eucharistic worship which are honored in universal liturgical life, and to restoring the use of Latin, Gregorian Chant, and sacred polyphony in Catholic liturgy.
We Catholics possess a living heritage. We owe a duty to our posterity to transmit  it in its fullness, and as a living tradition, This is not only the feeling of Una Voce, it  is the teaching of all the postconciliar Popes.  Throughout the world, the City of Savannah is known to be "Steeped in Tradition",  why should it be any different when it comes to our Faith as handed down to us by our ancestors who built our beautiful Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, specifically for the worship of the Roman Latin Rite.  If  the use of our Cathedral can be given to Protestant denominations for the worship of their liturgy, and to the Savannah Symphony for secular purposes (concerts), then,  we feel it should also be given to the Roman Catholic faithful, whose very ancestors built it.

The People Cry for Reform And Reverence.

by David E. Dowd -- Holyoke, Massachusetts
Even  though, with his indult,  Ecclesia Dei,  John  Paul II encouraged  bishops to be generous in permitting the Latin Mass, Bill Wrobleski, speaking before Latin Mass supporters in Springfield, MA on December 4, spoke for many of us in saying "They are not being very generous."
After  describing the debate over how  unlawful it is  to suppress the Latin Mass, Wrobleski again  cited the 1988 moto proprio and noted where the Bishop is petitioned by the people, the Bishop should permit  the Latin Mass in his diocese.
Wrobleski noted that the Roman Rite can be traced to the time of St. Gregory the Great and his compilation of liturgical texts of the Latin West in the 6th century.  "The Roman Rite  is the oldest,  most  venerable rite in the Catholic Church,"  he said,  Its Latin language has not changed in 1400 years!”
The Novus Ordo was  promulgated in 1969 by Pope Paul VI," noted Wrobleski.  He pointed out that the English version has changes that seem to reflect local  whims on a frequent basis. Wrobleski  recalled  that one of the purposes of the Tridentine Council's codification of the Latin Rite was to combat the heresy of Protestantism.
"The modern times," he said, "are characterized by relativity."
His audience recognized the role of the Latin Rite to combat the heresy of Modernism in our own time.  He noted that Latin has been the official language of the Church from the third  century. "Meanings in Latin do not change," he said.  "The Latin retains the doctrinal integrity today,  just as it has in centuries past,  and  the ancient language is not subject to the manipulation that the present day vernacular suffers."
Wrobleski described the origins of the Mass and specific decisions during the Council of Trent.  He provided examples of reverence in the Tridentine Mass, for example the prayers at the foot of the altar.  These prayers provide the priest a special grace, he observed. "The priest will not ascend the altar until the prayers are said, which reminds the priest how unworthy he is."
Wrobleski provided examples of how sin, purgatory, hell and the world are presented in  more  realistic terms  in the Latin Mass.  "These are topics modem man finds unpleasant," noted Wrobleski.  He noted that our Faith addresses them realistically be restoring fear of the Lord and his just punishment for our sins, in the Latin Rite.
Wrobleski pointed out that the new Rite of Mass was drawn up by a  "panel of experts" appointed by Pope Paul VI. These same "experts" stated that  "the Roman Canon was very deficient". This same Canon has served the Church since the time of the Apostles. Longing  for  a  relationship with  the transcendent, which restores the humility in these irreverent times, many lay people are turning back  to the timeless teaching of our spiritual ancestors,  and choosing the liturgy of  St. Ambrose and Pope Leo VI, over the contemporary styles that seem to maintain no stability.
.
Wrobleski researched an encyclical from Pope Paul VI, jubilate Deo,  and found that it urged  that the faithful be able to sing the Mass in Gregorian Chant.  Then he sadly noted, "Every bishop in the world ignored him."
As an exercise, Wrobleski recommended that the layperson compare the Novus Ordo prayers to those of  the traditional Latin Rite. He suggested that one will easily find that the transcendence and mystery that so many are now searching for, are firmly planted in the ancient Rite of Mass.
Don't Forget To Return Those Petition Forms!----
Many have requested petition forms, but have not yet returned them.  Even if each person on the list gets ONE other signature, (husband, children, family relations) we will have DOUBLED our list!..
And in addition to the submission of our petition to our Bishop, we urge everyone to please write to the bishop independently and call the chancery office to request the Tridentine Mass on a regular basis.  Below is a sample copy of a private letter to the bishop requesting the Latin Mass that you may use as a guide in writing your letter..

Your Excellency,
My family and I are Catholics from [ insert your parish name here], Savannah, Ga.

We would like to be able to attend a Sunday Tridentine Mass on a regular basis at a central location.  We understand that the Holy Father has authorized you to give this permission in his Apostolic Letter, "Ecclesia Dei".  We know other Catholics in Savannah who would welcome the chance to hear the Mass in Latin according to the 1962 Roman Missal.

Thank you for your consideration of our request.  We pray for your intentions and favorable response.
Respectfully yours in Christ,

(insert your name here)

"The things we have heard and understood, the things our fathers have told us, these we will not hide from their children but will tell them to the next generation... "
Let us today commend this intention to the Immaculate Heart of the Mediatrix of all graces. Let us implore her glorious intercession; now and in the future. What we are asking must surely be pleasing to Her Immaculate Heart; that Her Divine Son will be more widely known, loved and worshipped in His eucharistic sacrifice; that through the traditional Mass the graces of Calvary and the power of the resurrection will flow ever more abundantly to mankind; that the shepherds of God's pilgrim flock will lead their people to heaven in an ever deepening spirit of adoration and praise, centered always on the most Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
"He gave a command to our fathers to make it known to their children that the next generation might know it, the children yet to be born. "
Please pray for the Church,  for the health of our Holy Father,  and for our Bishop, that he may grant our petition for the celebration of the Tridentine Mass
