Welcome
We would like to welcome all to the “Una Voce Savannah” Mass of the Old Roman Rite.  Through the grace of God,  we are privliedged to witness this “Private Mass” being celebrated by Father Daniel Fullerton of the Society of St. John, who are in union with the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, and whose formation began in May 1998 when Bishop James Timlin of the Diocese of Scranton gave canonical approval to the Society with the blessing of the Holy See.  Father Dan is visiting a family here  in Savannah, and has kindly consented to celebrate this private Mass for our group..

Who is Una Voce? -  Una Voce (from the Preface of the Most Holy Trinity (with one voice) is an international federation of associations, founded in 1966 in Rome, that now includes national associations in 17 nations on every continent. It is dedicated to ensuring that the Roman Mass codified by St. Pius V is maintained as one of the forms of eucharistic worship which are honored in universal liturgical life, and to restoring the use of Latin, Gregorian Chant, and sacred polyphony in Catholic liturgy.

Members believe that use of Latin in the Mass and Sacraments is a unifying force, needed by the Church in these days of widespread controversy. They believe that using the rites which were the form of Catholic worship for over 1,500 years will preserve the traditional emphasis on the Mass as Sacrifice, with its central teaching of transubstantiation, This, in turn, will help reverse the decline in vocations as altar boys, charged with difficult and meaningful duties, will be imbued from an early age with a sense of the sacred.

It is the express will of Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, that “respect must everywhere be  shown   for  the  feelings  of  those who  are  attached  to  the  Latin  liturgical tradition" (Ecclesia Dei, 6c)  not simply by theoretical assent to the lawfulness of the former rites but by a wide and generous response to requests for their celebration. His Holiness also said :

"In this matter I ask for the support of the bishops and all those engaged in the pastoral ministry in the Church."

It is in this spirit,. Una Voce Savannah, has petitioned our bishop, his Excellency Kevin Boland, Bishop of the Diocese of Savannah, for permission to celebrate the Tridentine  Mass on a regular basis at a central  location.   We continue to collect signatures for this petition on a daily basis.  And,  as the support  for  the Mass continues to grow, we ask all our members to keep this special intention in their daily prayers. We  believe  that  using  the  rites  which  were the form of  Catholic worship for over 1,500  years  will preserve  the traditional emphasis on the Mass as Sacrifice, with its central teaching of transubstantiation.

This, in turn  will  help  reverse  the  decline  in  vocations....  By  introducing the Latin Mass to our hildren,  they  will  be  imbued  from an early age with a sense of the sacred.  Our members are dedicated to ensuring that the Roman Mass codified by St. Pius V,  is maintained  as  one  of  the  forms of eucharistic worship which are honored in universal liturgical  life,  and  to  restoring  the use of  Latin,  Gregorian Chant,  and  sacred polyphony  in Catholic liturgy.

We Catholics possess a living heritage. We owe a duty to our posterity to transmit it in its  fullness, and as a living tradition..  This is not only the feeling of  Una Voce - Savannah,  it is the teaching of all the postconciliar Popes

Who are the Society Of St. John?  --  The Society of St. John is an association of priests and other clerics working  to  bring  back  the  days  when  faith  was  not  found  wanting,  but found everywhere.     With the encouragement of many, they intend to begin building a new village, which is to be an integral part of a renewed Christian society. Their goal is to return to the best of the past in order to ensure the best for the future, to draw from the Lord's storehouses things both new and old.

Liturgy. Priesthood. Education. Community. These are the pursuits of the Society of St. John, an association of priests and other clerics working in close cooperation with committed laymen who seek to revive holiness of life and Catholic civilization. The principle means of accomplishing this will be the solemn use of traditional Roman liturgy, the renewal of priestly life, classical education, and the building of small cities with a true Catholic culture to share with all. In brief, they want to bring back the days when the faith was not found wanting, but found everywhere.

. Their members, who are former pastors, religious brothers, professors and students, live already a life of solemn worship and serious study of God. They have already been blessed with the ordination of new priests and look forward to the moment when they will be able to put a roof above the many vocations that are waiting to join them.    Many also are the faithful who encourage us in building around and from the altar a new city that is to be an integral part of a renewed Christian society. A blind return to the past is impossible. To ignore the present is foolish. They want to return to the best of the past to ensure the best for the future.

Who is Father Daniel Fullerton?  ---   Daniel Fullerton was born in Utica, NY into a small Catholic family. His parents, Gerald and Mary, raised 15 children, two of whom are priests and one a nun. But his family life was by no means monastic:   "the feisty Fullertons"  gained the respect of their neighbors and friends as a joyful and fun-loving Catholic family.  It was in this family environment that Daniel learned the virtues and wisdom which go to make up a strong and lasting society. His love of wisdom fueled him to reach academic excellence in Parishville-Hopkinton High School, from which he graduated valedictorian. Years later he would draw upon this knowledge and practice in order to help lay down the blueprints for the Society of St. John’s vision of the restoration of Christian society.

Taught by his parents to love God and country, young Daniel chose to serve in the military. He entered the U. S. Coast Guard Academy and planned to dedicate his life to this work. After an intensive spiritual retreat, however, Daniel realized that he was being called by God to an even higher duty: to serve God and all men in the priesthood. In 1985, Daniel entered the seminary of the Society of St. Pius X in Connecticut. He finished up his six year formation in Switzerland, and on June 27, 1991, he was ordained to the Priesthood. He served as seminary professor for six years in Minnesota and gained valuable experience in the guidance of souls. After much prayerful discernment, Father Fullerton and several others founded the Society of St. John.

He is now involved in teaching and giving spiritual direction to the boys of St. Gregory’s Academy, where the Society is currently located. Father Fullerton serves as a member of the Society of St. John Council, and as Chancellor General—taking care of external affairs. The days are very long but the grace of God sustains him and the other members, particularly through the celebration of the Holy Mass and the praying of the Divine Office.

Father is by no means a "pious Joe," however. His wry sense of humor and knack for practical jokes make him the life of any party. He takes seriously the duty of Catholics to celebrate Holy Days joyfully and with festivity, and Father will admit that this, too, takes much effort. He also likes to spend his recreations with others cycling along the country roads or joining in competitive sports—or occasionally skiing or fishing. "A sound mind in a sound body" is a lived ideal in his daily routine in the Society of St. John. Be it prayer or study, work or play, Father Fullerton offers all to his Divine King and Heavenly Queen.
