MMBL First Fall Classic, Turned Out to be a Classic For the Ages:
The nation was sitting on the edge of thier seats waiting for the show down between The New York Giants and The Philidelphia Atheletics to begin.  In this the first World Series of the Major Mirror Baseball League.  This first season has been filled with excitment already.  Seeing a perfect game pitched by Red Ames of the Giants.  Cy Young getting the 500th win of his carear.  Walter Johnson single handly sitting down over 600 batters with strikeouts.  The
continued emergence of the much talked about Ty Cobb.  Great seasons from the Philadelphia connection of Jack Combs and Chief Bender.  A tight race until the end in the National League between the Chicago Cubs and the Giants.  And now the grand finale.....The World Series.
Everyone expected a tight series between these two divisional champions.  Both teams leaning heavily on thier pitching.  Many gave the nod to  the Giants due to
what if they reach up to that highest level that I know they are both capable of.  But I knew that my boys would find a way to win no matter what."  Lewis only spoke of this concern after the series was concluded.
"Just pitch the way you pitched all year.  Keep the games close and our boys will get the runs for us."  Christy Matthewson spoke confidently to the young pitchers going into the series without him to lead them.  Matthewson or Matty as he is know around the club house is "the heart of the team" says
the big offensive numbers they were able to put up during the regular season.  But even thier charismatic(often cocky) owner Mike Lewis admitted to being very concerned regarding finding holes in the Bender Combs two man demolition crew.  "They are unbelievable pitchers.  I have always said in this league pitching wins.  A great pitcher on top of his game will get a great hitter out more times then not.  If Bender and Combs are on thier game they can be unstopable.  I knew we had the greatest lineup in baseball this year, but part of me wondered
Lewis, he went down with an injury late in the season.
The two teams ceratinly gave the fans what they were craving......great baseball.  This was a series that will be remembered.  Even though the Giants sweeped the series four games to nothing.  The games were tight faught and close right to the end.  Filled with spectacular pitching duels everytime out.  The first game Louis Drucke and Jack Combs took it 11 innings each.  Both pitcher fantastic games.  The game was one to one going into the 11th.  "It was the type of game where one slip could lose it for you and I slipped."  a disheartened Combs said after the contest.  Giving up a homer to Beals Becker in the 11th.  The second game might not have gone into extra innings but a repeat of 2-1 score proved just as much a duel between George Mcquillan and Chief Bender.  In the third game it was evident how much the A's depend on Bender and Combs, giving up 10 hits and 4 runs tot he bats of the Giants.  However game four was another nail bitter the Giants coming out on top with a 1-0 win.  Which featured the second version of the Drucke vrs Bender battle.  It was as heartstopping as the first and again it came down to one mistake.
"Before this series started I knew that we would have to come up to bat and get some support for our pitchers.  I knew the games would be close and that we would have a chance, I also knew that they would get hits in those close situations.  So for us to win we also had to get the key hits when it counts.  Unfortuately we were not able to do that.  We had heroic performances from our pitching staff but we could just not break down thier starting rotation."  Commented A's owner Drew Maudlin after the series was over.
well with the 1911 season loming in the future the Giants and A's can't rest long.  Both teams keeping the majority of thier respective teams in tack, puts both in the running for the playoff race again this year.  It will be an exciting offseason with lots of big names out on the free agent market.  If this years World Series was any indication, MMBL fans will be jumping out of thier seats around the nation for quite sometime.
