A fine morality tale, as Mr. Allen tells it. Unfortunately, it’s almost entirely false. I should know: Dr. Turrisi is my wife; Rosa Fuller, my daughter. Read the letter from Dr. Adams to Rosa. He addressed none of her ideas. He offered no defense of US policies or actions, past or present. We still have not heard from him on these issues. He instead berated Rosa with a series of abusive names. He offered no argument in support of these epithets. Such conduct is entirely unprofessional. He then sent his abusive statement to several UNCW students and some friends in his "address book." Rosa received abusive, threatening and profane e-mail messages from many of them. When these threats first arrived, Dr. Turrisi immediately contacted Dr. Adam’s department chair, and asked him to find out what Dr. Adams had sent these people and to persuade Dr. Adams to help stop these threats. This was Dr. Turrisi’s first, last and only involvement in this case. Despite Mr. Allen’s story, almost everyone at UNCW knows that Dr. Turrisi is not a political person. She has been known to speak out on occasion against identity politics, post-modernism and multiculturalism. Allen’s statement that Dr. Turrisi intends to "file a lawsuit for defamation" against Dr. Adams is pure fantasy. His statement that she once "demanded the university discipline a colleague who disagreed with her" is a complete fabrication. Rosa reported the e-mail threats from two students ("you deserve to be dragged down the street by the hair"; you "should be hit by a baseball bat TWICE") to the campus police, on the recommendation of the Dean of Students. An investigating officer met with these students. He told me they showed no signs they intended to act on their threats. But, he said, if they repeated their threats, he would arrest them. Rosa then submitted a complaint, with no "coaching," to the University, which alleged that the abusive e-mail she received violated its Computing Resource Use Policy. She also asked to see the e-mail messages Dr. Adams sent from September 15 to 18. The UNCW Technology Division could retrieve only two of his 23 messages, but provided a list of all 23 recipients and the times his messages were sent. This list shows that Dr. Adams was in repeated contact with one student only minutes before she sent Rosa a threatening e-mail letter. So, who’s the hypocrite?
