I, Rosa Turrisi Fuller, a student enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, hereby submit, to the appropriate administrative offices and officers of the University (the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Dean of Students, and others), a complaint, which alleges that several members and one non-member of the University community have violated my rights, as a member of this community, by sending me e-mail messages to my University address that are abusive, threatening, profane or libelous, in violation of the Code of Student Life and applicable personnel policies.

A University faculty member, Mike Adams, sent me an e-mail message, dated September 17, 2001, with the use of the University’s central computing facilities and services, from the address: adamsm@uncwil.edu, which berated me, with no semblance of an argument, with abusive epithets, which falsely represented me as "dishonest," "intentionally divisive," "bigoted," "unintelligent," and "immature." The intent of such a message is intimidation and defamation. I have reason to believe Adams may have sent copies of his false representation of me to others, inside and outside the University community, with the use of the University’s central computing facilities and services. I, therefore, ask the Office of Information Technology, and any other appropriate office or officer, to let me and my representatives inspect the e-mail messages Adams sent, from September 15 to September 18, as public business, in accordance with the Public Records Law of the State of North Carolina. If it is found that Adams sent his false representation of me to others, inside or outside the University community, and if these others acted on his false representation, and sent me abusive e-mail messages, then I also shall accuse him of libel.

A student, Krysten Scott, sent me an abusive, threatening, profane and libelous e-mail message, dated September 17, 2001, with the use of the University’s central computing facilities and services, from the address: scottk@uncwil.edu, which in part said: "People like you deserve to be dragged down the street by your hair. . . . I hope you will have the good sense to keep you[r] liberal moth shut at a time like this. No one needs your shit." The intent of such a message is defamation, intimidation and the communication of a threat. I have reason to be concerned for my personal safety.

A student, James Ryan Price, sent me an abusive, threatening and profane e-mail message, dated September 17, 2001, from the address: rprice@hotmail.com, which said: "this is a bunch of worthless piece of shit I have ever read in my life, who ever wrote this should be hit by a baseball bat TWICE, just to make sure he/she or IT got the message." The intent of such a message is intimidation and the communication of a threat. I have reason to be concerned for my personal safety.

A person, evidently not a member of the University community, Mich Thompson, sent me an abusive, profane and libelous e-mail message, dated September 18, 2001, from the address: mich_thompson@ hotmail.com, which in part said: "Dear socialist scumbag, I just finished reading a piece-of-shit, anti-American essay authored by you and I felt compelled to respond. . . . If you really believe that excrement that you wrote it is very obvious that you live in dream world which is likely perpetuated by the psychotropic drugs which you ingest to deal with your indubitable mental disorders. . . . These madmen must be hunted down and killed, no questions asked. If we don’t do it now, the next time it will be a nuclear detonation with millions dead. Of course, you would probably love that! P.S. AND YOUR BREATH SMELL LIKE AN ELEPHANT’S BUTT!!" The intent of such a message is defamation and intimidation.

I ask the appropriate administrative offices and officers of the University to investigate my allegations and, if warranted, hold the above named members of the University community accountable for their conduct under all applicable university policies and procedures. I also ask the appropriate University offices and officers to stop the entry into the University’s central computing facilities and services of any messages from the addresses cited in this complaint.
