The Restoration of Jewish Roots Taking Place in the Church Today

About thirty years ago Messiancic Judaism was born with a small group of Jewish people who had come to faith in Jesus, the Jewish Messiah. During these past years it has grown to the place where there are hundreds of Congregations not only in this country (U.S.A.) but all over the world. There have been Jewish people who have accepted Jesus ever since He came. However, most of them were expected to assimilate and become so called 'Christians' and leave behind their Jewish culture and heritage and become a part of  the predominantly Gentile Church expressed through a Western style culture.

The Messianic movement differes from the established Church, although its members could also be called Christian, in as much as they incorpoate some of the Jewish traditions, keep the Biblical Festivals (which Jesus did) and express their faith more in the way in which they understand that Jesus did when He was here.

This has had a surprising effect upon the Church at large.About ten or fifteen years ago Messianic music began to find its way into churches. This was probably not deliberate but the praise and worship leaders especially in Pentacostal and charasmatic churches no doubt found the rhythms new and captivating and many were probably not aware that they were even Messianic.Israeli style dancing was a part of worship in many Messianic congregations, and we soon began to see this filtering into churches, even the traditional and if you will,' Main Stream' ones too. Then churches began to show an interest in learning about how Jewish people observe the Passover, Pesech in Hebrew. By now Christians were beginning to discover that what the Church celebrates as Easter, is in fact, Passover.

The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, which is Hebrew for, literally Head of the year, or begining of the year, is a civil new year, the Biblical or religious new year starts in the month of Nisan on the Jewish calendar, or around April on ours.In other words it begins in the Spring and Passover is celebrated on the fourteenth of that month. Therefore the Biblical Time of the 'Blowing of Trumpets' Yom Truach in Hebrew, is celebrated as the Civil New Year on the first of Tishrei. The shofar is used for the ' Blowing of the Trumpet'.

Those of you who are familiar with the blowing of the shofar know that it is an awsome sound. It proclaims the Sovereignty, majesty and Power of Almighty God. It also heralds victory, and gives a warning in times of danger. It certainly calls us to 'pay attention' and is not to be ignored. Remember it was used in the battle of Jerich, Gideons army and the watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem. Therefore it is quite a 'wake up call'.

Surprisingly there has been  a demand for Shofars and an interest in them in the Christian Community. This was completely unheard of until recently, and non Jewish people weren't even familiar with them or knew what they were, and one has to wonder, 'What is happening?' Recently we heard that in a very traditional church denomination they are now holding 'Healing' services accompanied by signs and wonders ( which is of course a departue from the so called norm.) opening the service by blowing the Shofar.

Many churches are eagerly seeking to learn more about the Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith. It is a powerful wave that is sweeping across Christendom and has gathered momentum over the past five years in particular. It is exciting to see it taking place because those of us who were called to this thirty or so years ago, can remember that there were few that were listening or interested. To witness this blossoming of enthusiasm in the Church is indeed a miracle and a definite breath of the Holy Spirit. No man could work up this interest and turn the hearts of Believers to develop a deep desire to know more about what God's plan still is for the Jewish people and to search for what the Church may have lost during the early struggles to establish herself. This could be interpreted as a real yearning and heart cry, on the part of Believers.

It all adds up to an 'End Time' call of God to the Church, to wake up.

"We must work the works of Him who sent Me, while it is day; night comes, when no one can work."
          John nine verse four.
