Cafes
Until a few years ago Tynside was a wasteland for caffeine addicts with little more to offer than geriatric tea rooms. Suddenly Newcastle has swish cafes coming out of its ears.

Blakes Coffee House
Ramshackle NYC deli-style coffee house, complete with creaky wooden stools and loads of crammed in tables. A perfect venue to kick-start a slow afternoon with a liquor hot chocolate, or to cool off with an iced coffee. Don't miss the made to measure sandwiches and original combo dishes-who ever thought lasagna and nachos?
Open Mon-Fri 7am-5.30pm, Sat 7.30am-5.30pm and Sun 10am-4.30pm

53 Grey Street. 0191 261 5463

Cafe Blue
Taking its name from the long-awaited Blue Carpet which now occupies the once empty space outside the Laing Art Gallery, this light airy cafe is within easy reach of the city centre. Enormous breakfasts, tasty paninis and ciabattas, nachos, pizza slices and sandwiches are all available at a reasonable price.
Open 8am-5pm Mon-Sat

9 Higham House, Newbridge Street West. 0191 222 0371

JT's
Newcastle's only 24 hour joint, this odd Italian cafe becomes as lively as most pubs in the area from 11pm-3am. Its selection of hot drinks isn't exactly extensive, and there is no booze whatsoever despite the wine list they give you. However, there is a wide-ranging English/Italian menu that offers most dishes right around the clock, though we're definitely talking convenience rather than quality here.

Leazes Lane. 0191 222 0659

Quayside Cafe
Quaint-looking mini cafe offering their famed and delicious breakfast in a stottie as a 7am lifeline for builders and clubbers alike. They also offer equally important mugs of tea.

1 Queen Street, Quayside. 0191 221 1010

Starbucks
Seattle's greatest export and the granddaddy of all new-fangled coffee shops.
Open Mon-Fri 7.30am-8pm, Sat 8am-7pm and Sun 10am-7pm

5 Blackett Bridge. 0191 230 3484
