the Cove
is the loose name of the northwest corner of Jennings Hall 3rd floor (Veda / Cafeteria side). The Cove existed 1999-2000. Tank was in room 314, David Carrington and Jon Fox were in 313, and Matt Carey and Jon Hoyer were in 312. We were about the only people ever there, because the 311 guy only came home to sleep and shower. Stephen McKenzie joined us that next semester, and 311 guy's new roommate pretty much got added to the ranks.
Because we were all pretty much always online, and because Goose spent more time in Matt's room with Goose's computer than in his own room, we decided one day that we needed to distinguish between ourselves and the outsiders.
We decided we were the Pirates of the Cove. The official title was
something to the effect of "Pirates Ruthless of the Northwest Cove" or something like that, but we usually just said PoC or Cove member or something.
After Fox's junior year, he tried to make his , Matt's, and Goose's
little area the "Grove," after the street that doesn't exist anymore (btw, Grove street doesn't exist anymore...) but that pretty much died after we left the dorms.
Non-members (that we liked) were usually lovingly referred to as "outlanders," "landlubbers" (though not often...), or simply "sailors."
Non-members we didn't like were called "Football Players." (Historical note: several football players were convinced that the Cove Members / the Vikings [Generation 1] were crazy or worse. They were extremely antagonistic.)
Generally, though, we didn't talk about it except in references to home. I.e.: "I'm headin to the cove to get my bag, you need something?"
And, yes, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" did figure into the selection of the name.
The Cove was also the original location of the Knife and Spoon Inn. During this time, the Knife and Spoon served as the Cove's Armory.
(Locate the Knife and Spoon.)
For a time, the Cove was divided off from the rest of the third floor by putting Fox's shower curtain across the hall to form a suite of sorts with furniture, decorations, and stuff in the hallway/common area.
This led to the Battle of the Shower Curtain. Those involved have been inducted into the Order of the Shower Curtain.
The Cove was not the first group to section off a corner with a shower curtain. I suspect that they will not be the last.
