Delta Pi's First Boat
1994-1995
As told by Greg Irwin:
Delta Pi's entry in the first (fall 1994) "I Can't Believe It Floats Boat Race" was an old refrigerator. They removed the door, painted it purple (with their letters), and paddled it in the race, which was held at the Heart of Texas Baptist Encampment on Lake Brownwood.
I think they finished third (second when SDK was disqualified).
When the race was finished, they scuttled the boat rather than haul the heavy former fridge out of the lake. I'm sure the fish are enjoying it now.
other entries in the 1994 race:
Iota Chi Alpha: a wood and styrofoam speedboat piloted by Tim Ward 1st place winner men's division and overall.
Sigma Delta Kappa... just go read this, it's worth it.
Zeta Chi: a solid styrofoam liferaft which they reused in later years. This boat was made and piloted by "Thunder" Dan Murray, RA of Jennings 3rd floor East wing, and an HPU legend.
Delta Chi Rho: a plywood boat called: "Delta Chi Row." 1st place in women's division, 2nd overall.
Alpha Delta Kappa: I don't remember what their boat was.
There probably were other entries in the women's division, but I cannot remember who they were.
