the Payne name


The Payne Geographic Society was the first to use the Payne name. They wanted to convey a sense of connection to Howard Payne University, so they considered the name "Howard Payne Geographic Society." However, they wished to avoid confusion with any official organizations as well as any problems that the university might have with the unauthorized use of their name. Since the PGS has no official ties with the university, yet is defined by the university, they chose to be the "Payne Geographic Society."

Other organizations, such as the Payne Historical Society and the Payne Parody Patrol later followed suit.
