Kittens in a Toaster

Ha! Made you look!

So. What, you're probably wondering, is Kittens in a Toaster? Let's just call it a free-for-all combination rants/recs/journal site (I lack the time and patience to keep a blog). Kittens in a Toaster is where you'll find anything that isn't an actual story. Could be me going off on a tangent. Could be recs of my favorite stories. Could be almost anything that catches my fancy. My fancy is easily caught.

As for the name: Kittens in a Toaster is (was) the name of my twinz garage band, now sadly defunct due to their inability to agree on what type of music they wanted to play.

My twinz, Andrew and Morgan (also referred to as Frick & Frack, Thing 1 & Thing 2, and The Glimmer Twins) will be turning 21 in a couple of weeks. Andrew is straight, Morgan is gay, and the people who do twin research are very, very confused. Thankfully, they take after me more than they do their father, hence Kittens in a Toaster (the twisted sense of humor comes from MY side of the family, thank you).

Recs!

Tales of the Mountie Slayer by Magnes and E.A. Karras: Yes, it looks huge and possibly scary and it is. It's also funny and sad and bizarre and totally unlike anything you've encountered before. Magnes and Karra have built an entire Due South AU in which vampires, demons and other denzines of the darkness live side-by-side with humans. They've also created some of the most interesting original characters to ever grace a fan fic. Best approached with caution, since it has this nasty tendency to suck you in and not let you resurface until several days later, stunned, bewildered, and as hooked as a junkie on smack. I stand in awe of their combined talent and evil (and I mean that in the best possible way).

Starfish's 'Slick' and 'The More Things Change'(available at squidge and www.mrks.org). 'Slick' features Fraser, Ray, a bottle of lube, and no redeeming social value whatsoever (I like that in a PWP). 'The More Things Change' offers us Ray, Fraser, a gay club, and the lesson that no matter how well you think you know someone, they can still surprise you.

Snowee's 'The Perfect Drug'. It's not often I find myself responsible for a story's existence. What happened was that Snowee was happily engaged in writing this nice little series called 'A Warm Place.' The third fic in the series was entitled 'Like an Animal', and I suggested to her that as long as we were on a NIN's kick, she try and write a song based on 'The Perfect Drug.' She did, giving us a completely fucked-up, severely dysfunctional Ray Kowalski on the run from his feelings for Fraser. True love triumphs in the end, but not without scars (kinda like real life). I'd like it even if it didn't kick ass, but it does, so read it. And while you're there check out her other stuff. I foresee great things for her (though not if she keeps letting me give her ideas).

Aouda Foggs 'Learning Curve' (K POV) and 'Learning Curve 2' (F POV)(available at squidge). Two marvelous, rambling, stream-of conscious narratives from Ray and Fraser about the nature of love and friendship.

Resonant's 'Juncture'. You have to admire a story that begins with the line: 'For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, Fraser and Ray are having sex.' A PWP that manages to pack a lot into its 4-5K.
