'Uni too strong for Roskill in season opener...' Monday 29 August 2005
Mt Roskill dominated the first quarter through some fine direct play and, with some indiscretions from Uni, probably should have been further in front at the first change. After a few changes Uni were able to match Roskill in the 2nd Quarter and at half time there was only a goal in it. A rousing speech from Taverna at half time saw Uni come out firing and completely dominate all over the ground. Power and Taverna controlled the center, Duggan and Taungakiavia providing solid leads in the forward line and Buckthought and Bassili cleaning up the crumbs. The final quarter saw Uni continue to dominate and put the game beyond doubt, although a late revival from Roskill saw them kick the last major.

'University show experience and class to roll Raiders...' Monday 12 September 2005
University were too strong in most areas of the game, gaining first use of the ball to dominate the first two quarters. Power was inspirational in the ruck for the Blues . University's height and aerial strength also caused Manurewa problems. Manurewa tried hard all day but could not maintain possession of the ball and the turnovers proved costly on most occasions, especially when Todd Taverna was playing a kick behind the play and reading the game so well and distributing with accuracy to team mates running off him and also to leading players down the ground. Manurewa had no counter to this style of play.

In rough conditions with a strong wind favoring the southern end, neither team were able to capitalize in the first half. Uni had the wind in the first quarter but were well held by Waitakere who employed a tactic of a number of their forwards streaming from their backline at the centre bounce. The 3rd quarter was the deciding quarter with Uni able work their midfield effectively to deliver to their forward line, piling on 6 unanswered goals. The final quarter saw the Uni backline clear the ball repeatedly to hold off a determined Waitakere.

'Uni tested in wet conditions, but Eagles fail to soar...' Monday 3 October, 2005
On a firm but water logged track, which made controlling the ball very difficult, Takapuna made first use scoring the opening goal. University replied with four straight and were able to go into the first change with a handy 3-goal lead, however lost veteran Pidgeon who required 6 stitches to a nasty gash on his forehead. University had the majority of the play in the 2nd quarter but struggled to convert and were punished by a couple of fine direct drives by Takapuna into their forward line resulting in goals. At half time there were still only 3 goals in it. With the ball spending most of the time on the deck, Takapuna were the better team in the packs in the 3rd quarter and by the change there was only 2 kicks in it. The final quarter was a hard fought affair, with both teams going in hard for the ball on the ground. University suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday. In damp conditions, the first quarter had both teams playing to the conditions, moving the ball forward at all costs - good wet weather football was the order of the day. University took first honours in an even first quarter. The second quarter was similar, University had the momentum but the Saints kept fighting hard and remained in the match at the main break. The third period was another struggle with both teams hitting the ball very hard. The final quarter was a cracker with both teams not giving an inch. 'Tigers tame Uni power-house...' Monday 17 October, 2005
In the best conditions seen for a number of weeks, the Tigers were keen to continue their mid season good form with the Blues desperate to strike back after their loss to the Roskill Saints in round 6. The game was played on a magnificently prepared Colin Maiden oval, which is a credit to the Blue’s club. The first quarter started fiercely with the Tigers doing most of the attacking. There were a number of great match ups with Tigers Pocock starting on Blues danger forward Duggan. Blues captain Taverna was tagged from the first bounce. Tiger’s player Todd Danks was sent off in the first quarter however this did not stop the Tigers from moving the ball quickly and catching the Blues off guard. The scores were almost even at the main break with the Tigers holding a small lead. The left footed Staines twin started to dominate after half time as he kicked 5 goals in the second half to put the game out of University’s reach. Taverna played well for the Blues, as did youngsters Bassili, Campbell and Baxter. The result makes the 2005 AAFL season possibly one of the closest competitions for some time with three teams locked on 20 points at the top of the ladder.

'Uni back on track after downing weakened Raiders...' Monday 31 October, 2005
This match was tipped to be close and with a number of the Raiders' key players out, was an even tussle at the start. Both teams kicked two goals apiece early on before the Blues were able to break away. Some fine play by big man Taungakiavia enabled University to go in at the first change with a three-goal lead. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were hard fought, even affairs with both backlines repelling numerous advances. Opportunities were hard to come by, but with some smart goals by youngster Monaghan and strong marking by Kumarich up forward, the Blues went in at the last break with a handy 5 goals lead. University had better use of the ball in the last quarter with their senior players in the midfield stepping up another cog and as a result, were able to seal the game.

A six-goal last quarter by University pushed out a score line that had been a lot closer in the first half. Both sides struggled with their kicking accuracy in a moderate breeze at Parrs Park, but in the end it was the hard work of the visitors’ midfield that sealed the win. Blues coach Taverna in the centre, skipper Duggan up forward and ruckman Power provided veteran solidity in the first half. University’s young midfielders Horne and Chatterton keep growing in stature week by week and took the game on their shoulders in the second half. Monaghan was rewarded with three goals for strong running and support play, while big forward Taungakiavia came alive in the third quarter. University was effective enough to claim the win but will be wanting to fine-tune their game in preparation for next week’s last home and away fixture and the approaching finals series.
