project Muni |
The completed machine. After a few weeks trying unsucessfully to keep up with Mikey on a 20", I finally have my beast. Stats are as follows: frame : Overkill Engineering Muni frame wheel : 24" Dice two-four. 14 gauge spokes, brass spline drive nipples, Suzue hub. tyre : Nokian Gazzaloddi 24" x 3" cranks : Tracer 165mm alloy pedals : Mosh half-step seat : viscount weight : 6.474kg as shown (14.3lbs) |
Ride Impressions Initially, I felt that there was a bit too much weight in the Beast, but it was just a matter of getting used to turning such a massive tyre again. Feels like second nature now. I had concerns with the width of the frame, especially where the crown joins together. There was no need to be concerned, I almost never hit my knees on the frame, just on the tyre! The frame feels super stiff. Once the wheel is bolted in, it goes nowhere. There really isnt the same sort of stresses in a unicycle frame as there is in a bike frame, after all, when you are doing something that requires strength, youre normally standing up! I have my reservations about the hub/cranks combo. I have access to a set of Shimano Deore cranks but I would have to grind off the spider which wouldnt really solve my problem. I know that a profile hub/crank combo would fix that, but that is out of the question right now, The tyre is incredible for trials/muni work. I found that with my weight (72kg) 14psi is about perfect. It gives enough pressure to not constantly pinch flat, yet is soft enough to not bounce me out of the seat when riding stairs and dropoffs. 16psi tended to have the same effect as insufficient rebound damping on a motorbike, and the uni acted like a pogo stick. The added mass of the tyre makes rolling over obstacles a breeze, and it looks unreal! |
