"Hello, Goodbye - Is Everything All Right?". . .
Since 'Everything's Alright" is my favorite song from The Blue Room, I've decided to use it as a title for this page. A very special friend of mine (who is also a very talented writer) has sent me a very nice piece on our favorite bass player. If you like this and would like to see more by her, please email her at unionjan@aol.com!
~A Man Named Hunting~
by Plan8Jan8
Have you ever noticed how some people on this planet are aptly named? After
meeting someone and absorbing just a fraction of their personality, you
completely understand that no other name within the English language would
better suit them. Have you ever been aware of the irony or the symbolism of a
person's name?
As an example, consider all the beings you know who are named JOHN. Despite
the fact that "John" is a Biblical name, it is known around the world as a
very common and ordinary moniker. "John" is one of the most traditional names
within our language, and since it has been used so frequently throughout the
times, "John" has adopted a kind of familiar and standard meaning. Referring
to someone unknown as a "John Doe" is a perfect example of how commonplace
and how simply public the name has become. With that being said, how many
"Johns" have you met throughout your lifetime that actually FIT that general
description of usualness? Ironically, the "Johns" I know in my life are quite
the opposite ~~ they are unconventional, complex, and strikingly original
human beings. Alas, "John" is an appropriate name to refer to these people,
because no other name could rightly describe them as individuals.
In entertaining the thought that some people are fittingly named, I thought
about my friend, James Hunting, and how the symbolism of his given tag
reflects his identity. I thought about James' personality and his
character... I thought about the energy that I absorbed each time I met with
Jamie... I thought about his music and how it made me feel ~~ or, more
importantly, how it made HIM feel. I quickly realized that James' family name
holds great signifigance in regards to his own persona.
At first, HUNTING sounds like a hungry and hurried name, doesn't it? I think
of a "hunter" as a tracker or pursuer... a huntsman who may kill or harrass.
Yet, the act or instance of HUNTING can actually mean "to search" or "to
quest". When I thought about James and his music using that definition, I
quickly understood how that meaning accurately described Jamie's nature and
musical intention.
When you listen to James play his bass guitar, you can actually feel the
substantial importance that music plays in his life. You can hear through his
musical interpretations how empowered he becomes. Mr. Hunting's bass lines
are very palpable and clear. Yet, while each note has a place and a meaning,
his playing is far from being stifled or limited. Infact, most of his bass
lines are running... as if to be SEARCHING for that higher level of music
comprehension. James takes his part of a song and knows it in his mind, but
he will always play it from his heart. As if on a QUEST, James eagerly
explores the depths of a song and creatively encourages the tune's growth and
progression while he plays.
I feel that Jamie uses his music as a divine and definitive source of
personal expression. His bass playing isn't just a simple rhythmic support in
a song. His playing investigates, examines, HUNTS, and probes every possible
opportunity to raise the awareness of each song... while always leaving the
listener inspired and enlightened.
So with this symbolic realization in mind, don't you find it ironic how
James' last name is HUNTING? Simply put, the verb truly seems part of his
personality... so the name given Jamie is quite apropos. I guess this means
that James is one of those aptly named people on this planet! Well, perhaps
no other name would better suit him. He is...
