What You Can Do To Help!
What can you do to help preserve the history of Union before it is all wiped off the map? I suggest you study the history of Union, remember as much as you can, write it down, and talk about it to anyone who will listen. If you have old pictures write the names of the people or the name and location of the building on the back so that your descendants will know who they are, and include dates, if possible. Save old letters and papers. If you cannot keep them yourself, you should give copies to an interested institution, such as the Boone County Public Library or the Boone County Historical Society. If you give them to a family member you might consider allowing the library to make photocopies of the documents. Old postcards and other items, such as advertistments, posters, campaign memorabilia, quilts, and unique period items, often document aspects of an area's history. Perhaps Union could have a special day on which such items could be displayed and the area's history talked about. Consider writing your memoirs. You need not have lived here "forever". Write about your life and what you know. Tell unusual things you remember, how you contributed to the area. If you do not feel you are a good writer you might write a series of letters to your grandchildren telling about your life. Your grandchildren would be pleased to get such personal letters, and you would save copies, of course, so that you would have a record. It would not be hard to turn letters like this into a real autobiography.
