Kamo

Kamo was built by Rickmers Werft, Wesermunde in 1944 as the minelayer 'Gaarden' for the German navy. Taken over by the British Government as war reparation in 1945. The New Zealand government took the ship over in 1946 when she was renamed 'Kamo' and arrived in N.Z. in August 1947. After several years trading was laid up in Sydney on 23 April 1957. Sold to Sunning Trading Corp. Panama in 1958 and renamed 'Sunning'. Sold to Chip Hong. Nav. Co. Ltd. in 1961. Sprung a leak and foundered on 31 December 1961 in pos'n. Lat. 8.10'N Long. 116.26'E while on passage Kaohsiung to Singapore. Historical information Ian Farquhar's Union Fleet.
