Wahine

Wahine was built by Fairfield Ship Building and Engineering Company,Govan in 1966.Wahine was engaged on the Wellington Lyttelton Steamer Express run with accommodation for 931 cabin passengers and space for 200 cars and trailers. She was powered by turbo electric machinery and had a service speed of 22 knots. Unfortunately on the 10 of April 1968 in gale force weather conditions Wahine grounded on Barrets Reef at the entrance to Wellington harbour, refloated and subsequently foundered off steeple rock inside the harbour with the loss of 51 lives, declared a constructive total loss 9 May 1968 and wreck removed by United Salvage Pty Ltd. Melbourne 1968 - 1973.
